I believe the Lightnings have a 9" read end instead of an 8.8" so why do I never see any high powered Cobra with the 9", can the 8.8 be built just as strong for cheaper that the 9?

All 4.2l and 4.6l F150s have the 8.8" differential and all 5.4l F150s have a 9.75" differential. Typically, the 8.8 is enough for a Cobra. Simply put the 8.8 can handle the torque with an aftermarket cover. The LPW cover works well.

Its not the 9in you're thinking about. The 9.75 is just like the 8.8 in design and the way you set it up its just a little bigger. They quit putting the 9in in the trucks in the late 70s
early 80s.

Sorry, I thought it was 9. Okay, so the 8.8 can handle what a Cobra can put down. How does the 8.8 deteriorate over-time as in how long will it last if it's raced and street driven?

A friend of mine is making 1300hp with an 8.8 running in the 7's...you'll be fine for a while.

Good girdle, make sure the axle doesn't move around, i.e. control arms, etc.
