knocking motor.. will gear oil temporarily fix problem?

I'm going to try and help him out and lend him the money. Can a rebuild kit be bought for under a grand? If so, I'll buy it and let him deal with having it installed

This. Try posting in the New Edge Cobra section. They're are some decent deals to be had on basic rebuild kits out there.
