This is going to be a long read so get some coffee.... Ill wait :)

So back story:
My car runs AWESOME for the first 2 pulls.. after that it gets seriously heat soaked. I have seen IAT2's in the 155's pretty easily.. A 2.2 is a hot box anyways, spin it to 21psi.. it doesnt get better. So with all that knowledge in my back pocket I set out to fix the issue. Of course I could go trunk tank and have a little more reserve fluid to keep the heat down for a while longer.. I already had a AFCO dual pass h/e, but that just didn't seem effective enough for me. That will get the fluid no colder then ambient. So I looked at the killer chiller. What an awesome looking setup and such a great idea! However the drawback is while it freeze's the fluid down, it only does the amount of fluid you have on hand and then has to re-cool it. I had a aftermarket intercooler tank which as most do, only holds about a gallon or less. Hmm what if I combined solutions so that canyon runs, back to back freeway runs, and maybe even an open track day would net me even more time on COLD fluid.

So thats where the path starts. Get a tank built and install the KC. Unfortunately since I have owned the car I have always had AC issues. I rebuilt the AC a few years ago, replaced all the seals and drier.. but it always had a small leak that would require me to keep re-filling. A serious PITA in Southern California. So my plan was to do it once and do it right... This has been a experience for sure.

I ordered the following:
New compressor
New condensor
New seals
New drier
Pag oil and Freon
AC flush setup
New valve cores
Trunk tank
All fittings and hoses and accessories

Onto the pics (description will be above the pic)
New condensor (i would later find that this would cost me countless hours of fitment issues)
2014-09-05%2010.28.00.jpg

AC flusher, way too expensive for what it is but it worked great so i cant complain
2014-09-06%2014.37.29.jpg

The freon I thought I needed that I ordered first. The amazon seller was not interested in allowing me to return this.. so i sold it on CL for the same price i payed the next day!
2014-09-10%2010.28.41.jpg

50 ft of 3/4" heater hose, which i used ALL of.. yes ALL 50 feet. I was surprised
2014-09-16%2013.06.53.jpg

Ordered 3 of these. I didnt want plastic in there to break off so i scoured the net to find these expensive bitches. 1" npt to 3/4 barb in aluminum (i was concerned with brass and aluminum being dissimilar)
2014-09-24%2013.38.07.jpg

All the random pieces needed (some 90 elbows, 1.75" adel clamps, worm gears, and clear 3/4 for tank install portion)
2014-09-25%2010.23.56.jpg

The badass trunk tank i had made! Rule 1100 (hope thats enough) pump and about a 5-6gallon capacity.
2014-09-25%2015.42.08.jpg

The first trip to home depot for insulation. I bought 30 feet and ended up buying around 60 feet I think.
2014-09-26%2008.34.17.jpg

Intercooler pump connector (this is an EV1 connector for anyone interested). I didnt want to snip the stick one so i used this.

The crowning jewel! Gen3 KC. Had to wait a little while for it to show up, but you know what they say. Good things come to those who wait! Joe is awesome btw. More on that later.

2014-09-30%2021.00.13.jpg

Hmmm I ended up selling the wheels, now I have a little money from wheels and a little extra from the pocket book. Whats on the market.. Ill let the suspense build.
2014-10-01%2019.37.30.jpg

So this had to be purchased because I tried to remove the valve core to replace it..
2014-10-02%2013.46.31.jpg

Come to find out the damn thing was basically welded in the line.. Which upon removal attempt i twisted and mangled the aluminum tube :( $100 mistake :bash:
2014-09-26%2017.28.37.jpg

I then cut it off so i could make sure from the other end it was replaceable.. sure enough just gunked up :(
2014-09-26%2017.30.48.jpg

So I started assembling the AC
2014-10-02%2016.13.54.jpg

and ran into this shit AGAIN, since the KC has a add on assembly it no longer fit by the mount. UGGGGHHHH More HOURS spent
2014-10-02%2017.24.58.jpg

Mod #4? I cut a notch to clear the fitting... Yea not enough
2014-10-02%2018.12.57.jpg

So i said F it and cut all the mount off above the top mount bolt. Ill make a box to go around the lines and back up to the rad mount later (maybe)
2014-10-02%2019.00.22.jpg

I had to cut more of the foam bumper off so get all the lines in.. Ended up cutting off the mount.. then I said well crap now how do i afix it to the bumper?!
2014-10-02%2020.42.10.jpg

So i made a little bracket :)
2014-10-02%2020.41.56.jpg

No way insulation is fitting in there...

Finally threw in 6 gallons of fluid and started up the pump. Worked very well!

Proof read edit: I will update this post after tonight when i get the car back together (hopefully).
To explain why Joe is awesome, he was going through some family stuff this last month and still managed to deal with me calling every week and get my kit sent out. And then last night i was very confused why I couldnt find a spot for the damn orifice tube and looked all around the net but couldnt find out where it was. So at 9pm last night i called Joe hoping he would answer and he DID! He was kinda nd explained it was already installed which made me extremely happy as that meant i was another step closer.

The whole freon thing.. they make the ES12a in two flavors... the Normal r134 replacement and then the industrial stuff. Thats what i needed and found (for a pretty high price) else where on the internet. I have prime through amazon so i try to get everything from them..

Lastly for this update is the weight.. it IS a concern to me (and others apparently :p) though at this power level I suppose ~100lb is slightly marginal if it helps performance, which this should.

Here are the calculations on exactly what weight I added..
Heater hose is ~12lbs dry (50ft holds 1.15 gallons x 9.388lb per gallon) -> 10.79lb+12lb = ~23lbs
50/50 coolant/water is 9.388lbs per gallon
Trunk tank itself weighs ~13lbs
6 gallons of 50/50 is ~57lbs
killer chiller weighs about 12lbs

Total added to car (this does not take into account front afco DP exchanger removal [I deleted the fluid H/E path altogether and have a stock in place to fill the sapce], front intercooler tank removal, and fluid in both items removal)
~105lbs

Which is around the weight i saved with the UPR k member, except it was shifted to the rear of the car where it needs to be. I would love to get the car on a set of corner scales and see where its at..

OHH and less i forget...

Thanks man, I have had the car apart for a month now unfortunately so I would hate to have taken up your space for that long. But damn do i wish i had a lift when i was running those lines front to rear..

Funny story, i had worked on the car and got all dirty, took a shower went about my night, went to bed woke up and the next morning when putting on a shirt i felt a tug on my back.. I had my wife look at it and i had a single 1/4" long piece of copper wire strand stuck straight into my back lol

It's a lot of work to replace all the AC gear and install the KC but it's really worth it.

Can't wait to hear how much of a temp improvement you end up with. Especially since you tossed the original front mount heat exchanger.

Good stuff. Great write up. I was one of the original cobras to get a killer chiller 7 years ago. I lived in Florida for the year. I would see iats of up to 160 with my genII whipple at 18psi. Once I got the kc installed, it would take a fair amount of driving for the iats to get above 100. And when they did, they only went to 120. The ac didn't blow nearly as cool. But damn, when they car was warmed up and the iats were at 80-90---the car was insane.

Cool write up! That's a lot of work you put in. Looking forward to see how low your numbers are and for how long they stay that way.

Great write up. I have a question. If you fill the rear tank with ice, say drive 20 minutes with ice in the tank and the killer chiller operating. Should the ice still be frozen after the 20 minute drive or does one thing have nothing to do with the other?

awesome write up! looking forward to your results. since youll be running your AC full time you have to make sure to check the system constantly.
is that a dads tank? your the first terminator ive seen with a half moon. im currently having a custom half moon built to fit mine.
what kind of insulation did you get for the bottom and sides of the half moon tank?

nice grab on the ccws!
please get some outside pics (maybe a shoot from Ace) :D

Thanks everyone.. I have a unfortunate and fortunate updates.

From where I left off:

Ok I got everything together and vacuumed down the system last I left you... I added one can, started car and put in 2nd can. This was my high side pressure. (ambient was like 100+ in garage, we've been having a bit of a heat wave plus I had ran the car previously to burp the coolant)
2014-10-03%2018.31.25.jpg

So obviously that's too high as ambient x 2.8= Goal High side pressure, which in this case is supposed to be 280. After some research its not totally unheard of for our cars to take 2.5-3.5 cans of industrial only. I was surprised but the AC was working so I left it at 2... The KC was doing its job albeit kinda slow. Proof:
2014-10-03%2018.43.25.jpg

2014-10-03%2018.47.07.jpg

So since everything was buttoned up and seemed to be working (just slowly), at midnight I took the car for a quick spin... I am over the moon happy with the cars look now!
2014-10-04%2000.29.34.jpg

As for the performance of the KC and Trunk Tank.. well, that night (~75 degrees) it worked.. just again not super impressive and not very quick to recover from WOT runs (max I logged after 2-4th freeway was 154).. at least not what I expected.. I was going to give it over night to check the high side pressure again once the car cooled off as my wife wanted to take the car out or a photo shoot (as did I) with new wheels.
Also I had a leak from tank cap, add that to the ever growing list of to do's:
2014-10-04%2000.01.55.jpg

I went to bed at like 1:30 Friday night and got up at 6am to wash the car before the sun came up (thank you So Cal) for the days shoot:
2014-10-04%2008.36.46.jpg

So the story of that day went like this. In the morning I checked the high side pressure's and they were slightly lower, so I added half a can and said lets try it out. So we leave the house and all was fine, then once in traffic, heat of day, and stop & go the KC wasn't working and my AC wasn't working at all. We (my wife, son, and I) proceeded to sweat our asses off "touring" around San Diego hitting scenic spots in ~98 degree weather. This is EXACTLY the reason I replaced all the AC stuff. I am sick and tired of personally mentally associating my car with insufferable interior temps and having to apologize for it being uncomfortable.... /rant And to add insult to injury my alternator decided the heat was too much also and started to take a shit..

So we went home, pissed and with a few ideas to try. I had read that high, high side pressure can be caused by low air flow over the condenser... Knowing this I checked my fan to radiator distance and there was a gap. Not a huge one but a gap none the less...
2014-10-04%2017.09.44.jpg

So I devised a plan to put some weather stripping on the fan like I have seen on here from another guy.. I went to local hardware stores and couldn't find what I was looking for so I improvised.
The best way to split a hose is like this I came to find out after cutting about a foot of hose entirely in half on accident.
2014-10-04%2017.26.22.jpg

Took me about 45 minutes total to get it to where I was happy with it all the way around:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/91492194/Shared%20PIcs/Trunk%20tank/2014-10-04%2017.40.28.jpg[/IMG]
They fit better then it looks in this pic
2014-10-04%2017.40.59.jpg

Once I got it installed there was still a small gap top and bottom.. I tried a few different things and found out that the only way to truly get this aftermarket replacement fan to sit flush was zip ties top and bottom as well as normal bolts.
2014-10-04%2018.22.27.jpg

Around this time my wife remembered there was a car show the next day (today) and was curious if I was entering my car, I said no but the friend I got the CCW's from was going to enter his car and has a ticket still. She said lets get it!
SOoooo more on the to do list for the night.. Go to autozone, buy 2nd alternator, install, test.... take lid off trunk tank and reseal... and (on a whim) swap the hose routing from the KC coolant side.. First the pics from the first two items then an explanation on the last part.

Too hot from the days driving still lol:
2014-10-04%2020.18.37.jpg

2014-10-04%2020.26.30.jpg

2014-10-04%2020.44.46.jpg

2014-10-04%2021.18.11.jpg

2014-10-04%2021.47.31.jpg

So the coolant hose swap.. this is how I had the KC and tank setup. My train of thought was that if the fluid is cooled and sent to the tank, it will always come from a colder source and the tank will be a repository of all the cold fluid..
Example.jpg

However in my process of reality vs. assumptions.. the fluid in the tank is ambient if the car has been sitting for a while. Best case scenario these days, that is in the 80's... so the amount of time it would take a perfectly running KC to make 6 gallons very cold is a bit longer then I think I understood :( So I was hoping that moving lines like this would help:
Example2.jpg

Once I did all of these modifications.. the car was running well. I went to bed last night at about 11 and we had to get up at 5am to park at the show (I was already running on fumes...) on the way (it was about 70 ambient) the car was running cool, the ac was working great and after I boosted the temps came down right away! All was well. Yea.. except when we left the show it was in the upper 90's and while the changes helped.. the in cabin was better.. it was no where near acceptable.. To understand how "cold" it was in the cabin sitting in traffic of the show leaving, think about standing in front of a fridge with the door open about 4 feet away.. another sweat fest in my car with me apologizing again :( :bash:

Once we got on the freeway the AC perked up inside and the car ran well. I boosted in ONLY 3rd gear.. starting from around 115 charge temp and I saw it shoot up to 175 by the end of the run!!! UNACCEPTABLE and higher then it was with the damn h/e in place.....

So now I'm at a bit of a loss... Its feeling like though the trunk tank due to its enormous capacity was not a good idea with the KC. I guess I should have known that when I didn't see anyone else with it..

So does anyone want to buy a complete trunk tank kit? :( :bash:

With all that "bad" news I have some outstanding good news.. Ill just let the pics do the talking (the quality is stripped for post):p
BTW This is the first car show I have ever entered into... :)
