what is the average cost of a trip like this? Attainable for the common man?

Airfare was 2400 per person. Rental car about $90 a day (For Holden Commodore). Hotels ranged from $60-130 for most expensive.

The big cost was all the tours/activities. My wife and I spent about $13,000 total including food for 15 days.

This might sound like a lot, but I have been planning on doing this trip for years.

Wow, now that's a vacation of a lifetime. $13K for two weeks in New Zealand doing everything you did, isn't bad at all. And it was something you had been planning for awhile. Surely looked like you and your wife had a really great time. Time you'll remember for a lifetime. Nice photos, and thanks for posting them. :)
