Hello all I'm new here and would like to know more about what HP levels the level 5 shafts can handle and if the case another major weak point? and again what HP level can it handle? I'm just weighing it all out for cost so I know which direction to go before starting to mod. I have been doing a ton of searching but no answers defined. With that said has anyone swapped the IRS out for a 9''? I know a 9'' will handle all the power you can throw at it, but with the swap I would imagine it will disable the traction control correct? What all is involved for the swap? I'd like to hear from those who have done the SRA 8.8 swap or even the 9''. Thanks in advance!

Spend 30 minutes with the search function or at least go back 10 pages and then come back with some more specific questions if they haven't all been answered.

Thanks but the search function works great with answers on the 8.8 but a 9'' is a different animal and nothing comes up for it. Also I read the how to section on this, but again it was related to the 8.8 not the 9 inch. And I also tried to view the pics in the how to section for the swap so I could get a look at what they were talking about but the link was bad. But thanks for the help!

There are guys running 8s with an 8.8 solid, and 9s on an 8.8 IRS.

How fast are you planning on going?
Are you familiar with the cage that is required for an 8 second car?

I am think a 9" is way over kill for nearly all street strip Terminators.

How could I be remiss for not posting one of the great Eaton-powered Terminator performances in history!!!

Jim, I was doing the research on this because I could get a fully built 9'' (bracing, welded tubes, fill and drain plug.) with 33 spline Mosers, detroit locker, and adjustable launch control bar for just about what I'd pay to do an 8.8 the same way. Unfortunately I've found that the angle for the upper and lower control arms is not good so I will be just doing the 8.8. This is going to be a street car that I take to the track. I've had a dedicated race "only" car before and I've been telling myself not to go that route. I guess what I haven't been able to understand when reading the how-to is, what do you need to do to keep the ABS and traction control working when going with the SRA 8.8? I'm trying to come up with what the cost will be to build the IRS 8.8 to hold up to the abuse of the track. I'm really asking if the IRS is worth building essentially.

If the IRS is not already blasted to smithereens then I definitely think it is worth re-bushing... even on stock axles. I would not buy axles until I broke one first.

However many of the guys who went solid had an annihilated IRS that needed a lot of parts replaced before they could even start on a re-bush job.

I can understand the SRA swap in that circumstance.

Why not be one of the few guys in the 9s with an IRS?:beer:
The car is much more enjoyable on the street with the IRS.... once "the hop" has been banished to the ash heap of history.

I love mine now that it doesn't hop.

Don't waste your time/money on a 9 in. its too heavy and the upper control arm mounts are in the wrong locations unless you run a fabricated housing.

The 8.8 solid axle will hold just about anything your going to throw at it with the right parts and be a significant weight reduction from the irs, but, if your only going to be going to the track 4 or 5 times a year with it, build the irs and it will hold just fine with the right set up. Tires become more a critical issue for longevity with the irs.

Jimmy, thanks I understand the logic I just wanted to make sure that throwing on some slicks and letting rip isn't going to turn into a big snap at the line because I didn't step up the rear end. If I keep the IRS it will be braced and re-bushed and a strong diff. cover.
SpeedDemon, Thanks for re-firming Jimmy views. In your sig. 458 Hp running high 10's is pretty impressive. Since you're in my area lets get together so I can check out your Terminator!

No problem. Shoot me a p.m. sometime I'm in the east Atlanta, Snellville, area.

The only reason my car runs what it does is because of suspension set-up. 60fts in the mid 1.4's.

I run a 9" in my car. Still has abs as well. If you still wanna go that route, just let me know and I can help you out. Alot of people knock the 9" rears but never have ran them

I may be very interested in talking to you about this. Saw your Youtube video awhile back when your Halfshaft went. I tried and I tried to keep the IRS in this car and threw all the best parts at it (i.e DSS Level 5s, Entire Full Tilt Boogie setup) but today it still failed. Still haven't had a chance to get under the car and look at all the carnage, but the passenger side had an explosion leaving tons of grease and I don't even know what happened to the inner CV boot. Haha. Halfshaft wasn't broke or I would not have been able to limp the car home 4 miles. Think the inner CV is toast. I'm just starting to think for what I want the car to be able to do, the IRS is going to be impractical.

No problem. Shoot me a p.m. sometime I'm in the east Atlanta, Snellville, area.

The only reason my car runs what it does is because of suspension set-up. 60fts in the mid 1.4's.

Don't mean to go off on a tangent, but what is your suspension set-up to get those times with the kind of power you're making? That's awesome!!!

Just let me know if you decide to go with a 9". I have the driveshaft from my car that i'm selling to mate a 9" to t56. Im going with a th400 and need a longer driveshaft. I broke 4 halfshafts before I finally gave up on the irs.

UPR tubular k-member, control arms, coil-overs, 14in 175lb springs and bump-steer kit, with QA-1 struts, and Steeda billet caster/camber plates up front.
Upr pro-series adjustable upper and lower control arms, spherical housing bushings, anti-roll bar, Tokico blue shocks with sn95 V-6 springs in the back.
It usually will leave with the front tires 3-5inches in the air, dumping the clutch off the rev limiter @ 6800rpm.

All I can say is...wow! I never knew such a low time was possible with the power you make. I mean, there are so many members here that claim 600Hp+ and list their ET in the low to mid 11's. I guess there are many factors that go into it (tires, launch, suspension, etc.) so who knows... Well, if I ever get the opportunity to build my car into a real strip car, I'm definitely going to pay special attention upgrading the entire suspension...you sold me.
