The race was awesome. There were 68 lead changes amongst 14 drivers. Very few cautions, I think there were only 4. It was also the highest average speed race ever, a record that stood since 1990 when Arie Luyendyk won.
How do you guys feel about the race ending under caution?
I have mixed feelings about it.
It's such a historic/important auto racing event that I can see trying to maintain consistency with the format, at least for how the flags can end the race.
However, I can also see that due to it's auto racing importance allowing the drivers to race to the checkered would make it much more exciting.
I'm split 50/50 but I guess it doesn't matter since I can't do anything about it either way.
It should end under caution, for open wheel cars at least. Danger level goes up drastically with open wheelers that close on a rolling start. I was at the IndyCar races both at Vegas and Fontana the past couple years. At Fontana they had enough laps left to red flag the race to give the fans a good finish. Vegas was a total cluster for a bunch of reasons.
GWC finishes are safer in NASCAR because the cars have fenders and the drivers have cages.
F1's procedure of having the safety car pull into the pit area on the way to the checkered flag at least lets the leading car finish first.
