I recently aquired a 65 Mustang coupe. It has a 1982, 302 in it. The person I bought it from didnt really know that much about what the car had as far as modifications.. My question is this;

When purchasing headers, do I look for 1965 Mustang 302 headers or for 1982 302 headers? I'm not sure if there is a difference in the head shape/port size/ mounting points etc..

When browsing parts I like the Tri-y's but wasn't sure they'd fit the engine I have. Any advice?

i assume youd be good looking for heads for either year i have a 68 coupe but it has a late 80's 302 in it i just looked for 302 headers. try headman headers they dont require any modding when installing in my 68.

I would say make sure you look for 302 headers for an early car, as they are cut to clear the normal setup in an early car's engine compartment. I had a '69 Stang with a late model 302, and ran Doug Thorley Tri-Y headers for early cars. They hug the block, and don't hang low under the car.

The '82 302 is identical to the 221/289cid on the outside. You just need to look for '65 headers for the 289. The only time you'll need something else is if you put 351 heads on it.

If you use 351w heads they take the same headers as 289/302. you want to buy headers for the year car you have not the year of engine.
