Nexium 20mg should be otc very soon if not already. It's not necessarily what you're eating and that shit will cause scar tissue in your throat. You then end up with Schatzki's ring and food will start getting stuck in your throat. That shit ****ing sucks. Silent reflux.. nobody likes it:xpl:

I'd never heard of Schatzki's ring, but after looking it up I'm almost positive that I have it. I used to have crippling heartburn for years until I cut back severely on my drinking and stopped eating crap food. I only get it once a month or so now, and it isn't bad at all. I do have difficulty swallowing from time to time though, and when I get food stuck in the bottom of my throat it's pretty scary because suddenly I can't breathe. I feel a lot better knowing that there's a medical reason for it though, so thanks for that!

Yeah but never mistook heartburn for a heart attack.

I did a cycle of one of the prescription heartburn beds a couple years back that fixed it for me. I was getting heartburn nightly and my esophagus was on fire, and started getting wicked stomach pains. Still get it every once in a while if I just drink straight jack or vodka and lie down immediately, so I make sure now, even if brutally shit faced, to drink lots of water to flush out my stomach before lying down so it doesn't just sit in there and rot my pipes.

I had no idea either until I bitched about it to my doc. It happened mostly when I was on an empty stomach and ate really fast. I'd take two or three bites, food would get stuck, and then I'd have to haul ass to the bathroom or wherever I could get to and throw up. It really sucked. The fix was an easy outpatient thing, they knock you out, put a balloon down your throat, blow it up and break up the scar tissue. Done. Then you take 40 mg of nexium a day and it's no problem. After I went a while on the nexium I came off thinking I didn't need it anymore. About a week later the silent reflux wasn't so silent...I realized I always had ignored it without knowing what I was feeling. I'm all good with taking nexium now. I had ignored that shit for years unnecessarily. The good news is if you have insurance it's an easy money 45 minuted procedure.

I started getting heartburn in my early 20's, drank a lot of booze back then and also liked to eat real spicy foods. At first my doctor had me take tagament but he wouldn't put me on it full time so I had to watch what I ate and drank. Eating yogurt and acidolfus, (bad spelling...), certainly helps get your digestive working right. At 40 something I saw a specialist and he put me on Prilosec and that helped a bunch. Don't eat anything for at least 2 hours before going to bed and that will keep stuff from going up your esophgus, (yeah, bad spelling again), and causing real damage.

I take some Prilosec if I know I'm going to be misbehaving, and the house is well-stocked with Tums, which knock it back but don't cure it. So I keep a bottle of this in my fridge for times when I'm caught off guard. It's new and it's freakin' awesome. Works pretty much as fast as you drink it. http://reliefotc.com/

The thing that comes to mind is what my instructor for the last few first aid re-certifications, one of his assessment steps is asking if you: 1.) Have ever had a pain like that before, and 2.) If it has ever hurt/felt that bad? If either of those is a "no" then it is generally considered time to see a doctor.

I'm on prescription Nexium and it took care of my frequent heartburn (I have a diagnosed hiatal hernia). I watch my weight, eat moderately, and get my cholesterol checked every year or so.

Outside of that, there's really nothing more that can be done. My grandfather died of heart attack in his early 60's and my father has had a couple (required a quad bypass for blocked arteries), and I'm hoping to avoid all that.
