I thought I read that the problem was that when the electric grid started rolling blackouts, the power to the water pumping stations went off. When the pumps didn't run, the water stopped moving throughout the system and taps open or not, there was no way to keep the pipes from freezing. Did I misread it?

yes this is what happened in my area

you think in these days a major utilities company would have its own power system or at least be on a different grid

we just checked into a hotel , still waiting on water

Yeah, that's awful. Sorry to hear it. Hope it gets back to normal soon. Any idea what the timeline is? I'm sure crews from other jurisdictions will kick in and help. Governments do a bit and people do the rest.

Well, it's an unfortunate set of circumstances that all played a part in creating the major problem. If you have a home, and the water stopped flowing because of no electricity on the grid. Shut off your water main, drain residual water pressure out the line. No water to freeze your pipes.

Not placing blame, and nor am I giving able-minded adults a pass, but I imagine people who have lived their entire lives in places that see snow less than once a year probably don’t have the secrets that some of take for granted.

Suddenly your power is out and its well below freezing. These people got caught with their pants down and nobody ever taught them how to pull them up.

Made it through the storm untouched. We never lost power, water, or anything. No burst pipes, likely due to our spray foamed exterior walls. Pretty much just a paid week off.

Have you guys seen the stories about people’s crazy electric bills from the “pay what we pay” companies.

Guess people are getting bills upwards of 10k dollars

That's unrealistic for any power company to charge that amount, and expect people to pay. Any links to that story?

Ive see a few stories just like that. They sell wholesale power. A group took over for the reliable electricity Commission. Or something to that effect. This new group raised the price of wholesale power. Apparently to show the supply and demand aspect. Some power companies are telling the customer go elsewhere, because the cost is like up 9k a megawatt or something absurd. Some people are getting 18k bills. Seems like most of the people living in Texas had an adjustable rate electric plan. Like a ARM home load. Its cheap sometimes, but in instances can skyrocket! Seems like crazy things going on there. People with standard electric contracts were not affected, from what I gather.

That's exactly it. I don't own a winter jacket, not one. The heaviest clothing I have is a hoodie. When it's really cold (30*) i wear a hoodie with a base layer under it. I don't own cold weather clothing because it doesn't get cold here and I don't ski so I don't go up north when it snows.

Heaviest I have is my shop jacket. My thin blood wouldn't help me either in a cold state. Grew up in the midwest, but all my cold weather durability is gone.

Man, glad I don’t live in Texas right now. We had an ice storm hit in 2011. I didn’t have utility power for 3 days. Thankfully, I have a generator and plenty of winter clothing.

Same with others. Woke up Monday morning to a dead silent house so I knew something was up. Thankfully my aunt lives next to a hospital so we stayed with her for 3 nights because he never loses power due to the grid.

Came home from work Thursday afternoon to a flooded kitchen, living room, dining room, and master bedroom. Our kitchen faucet is up against and exterior wall and a copper like burst. Dripping doesn't do crap when it's that cold for so many days down here and my faucet line is 3 inches away from the exterior.

Not the fun game of insurance and waiting that out...Sigh.

Hopefully the Gov will step in and get the power suppliers for price gouging

My provider has a notice saying that they were able to mitigate the price crunch. Specifically mentioned some companies paying 9k a kWh. Normal is like 12c.
