Anyone know about them? I'm being told about a couple around my area that has a real '89 Saleen (supposedly) and they'd let it go to a guy I know, for $5500, who would in turn get me to buy it if I wanted it. I read there was only 160 made in 1989, so this could make me a lot of money quick. Potentially.
ANYWAYS... What I do know about the Saleens is the suspension will be harsh, but great for around a track. I also know that they put out close to 300bhp, and the wheels/tires are wider than stock. Anything else I should really know? I'm going to get the VIN this week and call Saleen.

Thanks for the info. I read some used the factory seats also. I'll check the horsepower figures again, I think I found that figure a year ago or something.

Oh wow, I didn't see the pictures the first time I looked at your post. That's a pretty cool car! Your buddy's, you say?

Up to 1989 all of the Saleen Mustangs had unchanged powertrains. However, in 1989 Saleen built 161 Saleen SSCs with modified powertrains that made 292hp. You might want to check to see if this one is an SSC.

Here is more info on the 1989 Saleen SSC. HowStuffWorks "The 1989 Saleen SSC Ford Mustang"

Alright, this makes sense now. I was under the impression Saleen only did the SSC's in 1989. Awesome. Well, I'll find out later in the week whether it is a "regular" Saleen or an SSC. Thanks.

I know that one of my buddies (a spoiled rich kid) got a brand new 86 Saleen conv and ragged the piss out of it. He wrecked it once by leaving it in neutral and it rolled down his driveway and into a creek. He also put nitrous on it to see how far he could burn out with it. Lastly the car was triple white and his family owned a paving company and he would drive it to and from work, the inside was covered in tar. I believe this was a 1 out of 11 car, so sad.

The 1989 production numbers are 891 cars with 543 of them hatchbacks.
As for the differences over a GT.

1) Racecraft Suspension
2) Momo Steering wheel until 1990
3) Flo-fit Seats until 1992. 1992-93 had Recaros
4) 5 Lug with 4 wheel SVO type brakes
5) 16"x7" wheels in the front 16"x 8" in the rear (5 spoke or mesh in 1989)
6) Custom door panel inserts (Embroidered Saleen up to 1989)
7) Data Tag under the hood and a plaque on the shifter bezel
8) Most had a 170 mph or 200 mph speedo

That car in the pics is a 1987. At least it has the rear ground effect from a 1987 also the wheels are mesh (1989 and prior) and the interior is 1989 and prior. My guess would be a 1987.

Also the 1990 Saleen #190 is a black car (Not sure if these pics were supposed to be that car)

In case you are wondering how a Steeda guy knows this I own a 1990 Saleen.

Good luck with your find.
