This is a different dilemma than you may think.
I put an 04 console in my 98, and was looking to buy an 01-04 fog light switch to wire it in. However, they seem to be Iike hen's teeth.

I went to a local boneyard a couple days ago and found a couple of Ford Escape fog light switches. They are the same shape as the 01-04 Mustang piece and therefore pop into the correct hole without issue. However they have a 5 wire pigtail, where my 98 and the 01-04s have 4 wires.

The 01-04 Mustang pigtail even snaps into one of the Escape switches (there's 2 different designs apparently for the Escape), but with the Mustang pigtail wired up according to instructions I found online, the lights dont come on.
I also tried using the Escape pigtail and wiring it up using the correct pins in the harness, but still no luck, plus an extra wire still.

The correct wiring SHOULD be
My car wiring > 01-04 pigtail
Yellow > White/Black
Red/Black > Brown
Black > Black
Light Blue/Red > Light Blue/Red

Here's a few pics that may help.

The top pigtail is from a Ford Escape, the bottom one is from an 01-04 Mustang. They both snap into that Escape switch.

This pic shows the 2 different style plugs for the Escape switches, but the wire colors remain the same.

These are the 2 Escape switches. The one with the wider light is the one with the same plug as the Mustang.

The best way is to find wiring diagrams for both to compare the differences. Just because they plug in the same does not mean they are wired the same. It could be a simple matter of depining and moving the wires to the appropriate slot.

That would be awesome. I dug around a bit but couldn't find much. Thanks so much.
No problem. Let me see what I can get that will help you wire it correctly. Might not have it all tonight, but I'll get it all for you!!

This is how you wire the (Smaller) Escape SW pigtail into your existing 98 mustang wiring....

*The wiring is in the notepad attachment. The above pic is the 2006 escape switch pin layout. This should work for you, let me know if you have any problems.

Wow, thank you so much. I'll give it a shot tomorrow. It's the 2 grounds that had me flustered I guess. No reason I can't tie those 2 grounds together, right?
To answer your question on what years..
I believe the longer one is from an 01-04ish Escape, the other as you mentioned, is from 05/06

Thanks again @Vinnie_B that was quick! I'll let you know how it goes.

No problem @98 svt. That's correct just tie your grounds together. I have what we need to diagnose and troubleshoot thru your 98 mustang fog light circuit if any issues come up so no worries.

Ok, gave this a shot a few minutes ago. No dice for me.

I went:
My car wiring > Escape Switch

Yellow > Tan/Orange
Red/Black > Dark Blue/White
Black > both the Black and Black/white
Light Blue/Red > Light Blue/Red

Also tried Yellow > Dark Blue/White and Red/Black > Tan Orange

Nothing. No light at the switch, no actual fog lights on. :(

Ok no prob! No 12V Present. Before we chase this down. You still are using your 98 wiring......right?

I think the low beams need to be on in order for the fog lights to be on, high beam will cancel the fog lights

Once the Main light switch is turned headlight and Multi-Function switch is in Lo/Pass you will have 12V on Wire#13 which is Red/Black. This is off your original 98 fog light wiring circuit.

Yea..... its something like that......no 12V to the switch right now for some reason. It has something to do with the main light sw/ multi function switch position.
