So what do you guys prefer? I just picked up a few boxes of 3-inch magnum #4 buckshot. They have 41 .24 pellets each.

From what I've read while researching it, #4 doesn't give you very good penetration. I know the goal for home defense ammo is to reduce penetration but you don't want to reduce it to the point where it's not effective. I use Fiocchi low recoil #00. It still packs a punch (1150 fps/1427ftlbs) but it shouldn't over penetrate like a typical #00. The low recoil will also let you set up successive shots more easily.

I have a Remington 870P in 12 gauge with 00 buckshot, but I also have an old East German side-by-side break open in 20 gauge that is very easy to load, handle and shoot.
I have read a lot of articles, and they say the 20 gauge is a good home defense choice.

I use 00, but want to order the hollowpoint slugs that flower out to the size of a fist

00 in my Mossberg 930 SPX autoloader 12 gauge.

But in general, I keep a .40 in the speedvault attached to my side of the bed. A 9mm in a SV in the closet. a 9mm in a SV in the hallway, and another assortment scattered around the house. Don't even get me talking about the "secret room" in the basement.
