Here is some carnage of a 5th gear pull in my car.

I know it's going to need a complete rebuild but my question is what could have caused this to happen?

There is a lot of info here about 5/6th gear pulls and what you experienced. Basically they are a no-no on stock engines or engines built to OEM specs. The piston to wall clearances are to tight. The heat from the long pulls causes the Pistons to expand and you experience what you did.

Detonation very apparent on pistons. Tune a little to aggressive for fuel used.

That was a lot more than just highway pulls. I know I've destroyed a stock motor making highway pulls and it looks nothing like that. Like Weather Man says that looks like pre ignition or detonation and I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bit lean too with how that piston is melted.

That's crazy. On my first motor I did several high speed runs up to 170, it wasn't till I got greedy and started using nitrous that I saw issues with the pistons and the damage was no where near that.

Can you post the pics of the other pistons?

My guesses at this point would be, oiling issue, next a cooling issue or a bad injector. I think the only way the tensioner melts like that is lack of oil. Maybe all the debris from the piston clogged the oil pump pickup tube.

Pull the oil pump off and check the oil pump gear. The gears will shatter into a million pieces. Lack of oil supply would explain the issue with the tensioner guides melting. You could have also had an issue with the cooling system. A small leak can cause big problems. I always turn the heat on high during pull like this. I would also insure you have a temp gauge. The factory gauge will only show hot after the engine has already melted down.

Pull a part further and post more pics!

Still mind blown that people attempt 5th/6th gear in these cars. The only way I'd ever consider it is with a better spec'd engine and turbo car.
