My computer was working fine, but I decided to upgrade to int explorer 7, computer worked fine for a day or 2, then it started not booting up properly, getting stucj at the welcome screen, and sometimes loading up properly, but no desktop icons to do anything. I got it to work once intially, so I downloaded mozilla firefox, removed int exp 7, that didnt work. I tried system restore to an earlier date, didnt do anything but remove mozilla. I cant get anything to work properly, I have to hold the power button in to shut down.
In safe mode, I can get on the internet, and do some basic functions as I am guessing safe mode works. I have CA security center, ran that, found nothing.
I heard there were issues with the int exp 7, and google, but I have deleted both, and still nothing works properly.

Does anyone know if I am doing something wrong, or something just needs a simple correction? My next step was to download Mozilla Firefox again, and remove all traces of int explorer, but int exp isnt listed as a program anymore so that may not be needed.

Try to system restore from a date farther in the past first.

In safe mode, click start - run then type "msconfig" click the startup tab, click disable all, reboot. This fixes most startup issues.

You can selectively reenable items after you have done this. Post back if you need more assistance.

How old is the computer? What operating system? Have you visited any unknown websites recently? I've not heard of IE7 causing this particular problem. Sounds more like you installed a program that is causing severe conflicts, other than IE7.

You very well could have corrupted your OS somehow. Did you by chance remove Norton from the computer recently? With some of the recent versions of Norton if you uninstall it, it will inhibit you from getting on the internet, and thus the Norton removal tool has to be reset. If you can't figure out it you may try your local Geek Squad and have them possibly do a Winsock fix. If that's not it I don't know what to tell you

DO not go to geek squad, soaking the pc in gasoline will fix your computer better than geek-****

Sounds like a bad install, if any a better reason to upgrade , it would be now

Cin. Oh.
You have XP? Boot to the install or repair XP. Select repair. When it asks for the admin password hit enter, disk 1 (C). When the prompt shows type CHKDSK, then hit enter, leave the windows disk in the drive, so it can replace corrupt files. If it says it's ok, don't need to do CHKDSK, but it really does It's CHKDSK /P I think, it tells you anyway. Good luck! Usually works good for me.

What? Letting 17 year old kids that don't know what a computer is, is a bad thing? Geek Squad is the best...great for a first job, you literally don't have to know anything about a computer and be called a specialist.

I'm just speculating here but I think windows update downloaded a driver that didn't go over so well.

Boot your computer normally (no safe mode) and watch as the drivers load. See if it fails/hangs on a certain one each time. If it does, there is a good chance that is the driver you need to roll back. The names may not make sense unless you are familiar with them but google should point you in the right direction.

I tried the disable all in safe mode as previously mentioned, and also system restore from an older date, it takes a while but almost boots all the way. It gets to the point of showing all icons on the desktop, but you cant click anything internet related, its shows an hourglass, then nothing. I know the computer is fully booted when I can see my virus logo in the bottom right corner, CA sec center, but its not there, and hasnt been for a while.
I will try some of the other suggestions, I tried typing from home, but the keyboard and mouse were locking up for some reason, even though in safe mode, I can go on the internet. I can only type from work.
I did notice when shutting down, it never totally shuts off either, and I get 3 small windows where they prompt you to end now when something is stuck. Weird names though:
realsched.exe
Ea8
googletoolbarNo

Thanks for the help so far, I'll check back later.

I went to add remove programs, and removed some Windows updates, and now it boots up fully (most of the time), but will not access anything with the internet. It says there is no connection.
I now get an error window for a Win32services and then another window telling me it will shutdown in 60 secs, an NT error or something.
I wouldnt mind paying to get in fixed for around $50, but everyone wants $100 min. BTW, I am typing this from work.

Well, for the amount of time it might require, a $100. minimum isn't unreasonable nowadays. That's like an hours worth of work with someone who is more than a young technogeek. If your computer is old, might be time to bite the bullet and buy a new one. There are some awesome deals out there now, complete with Windows 7 already installed. If your computer is newer, it might be best to bite the bullet and re-install your operating system and applications. That's something that you should be able to do yourself and you'll have a clean system.

Do you have an indication of spyware? Pop up windows, wierd icons, etc.?

If so fire up safe mode w/networking and see if you can get on the internet. If so google up "Microsoft Security Essentials" its free and quick to download/scan.

If nothing comes up your going to want to re-run windowsupdate from safemode and have it install the updates you removed. Specifically any service packs you are missing.

All indications point to you having a Virus I hate to say it. Same exact thing happened to me and that's what it was.

UPDATE! I had enough fiddling with this thing, so I went and bought a 4gb usb drive, and moved all of my stuff I have onto it. It fit, I dont have much on it. I reinstalled windows xp, and got it working somewhat, it wouldnt recognize the audio, monitor, internet, etc. I called Dell, and they walked it through, and got eveything working again for free. They say I have lifetime assistance on it. Once they got it going somewhat, they did remote access and fixed it all. Now I just have to move everything (not much) back onto it. No viruses though. It was the Int Exp 7 that did it. I will go to Firefox. Thanks for your help everyone, all of these ideas got it going enough for me to get my stuff off, and enough confidence that it was fixable. I know if only saved $100, but who knows what will happen next. More $$ towards my Nitto 555's anyway.
