Hey Guys,

I was wondering if anybody knew of great drivetrain shops here in central IA? I live Ames and somehow broke my rear end on 99 Terminated Vert. I'm willing to take the car to a shop if they do great and reliable work.

Thanks

I've driven by that shop dozens of times while working, never actually took the L up there or talked to any of them though.

If you're familiar with Waukee, it's right on the east of the the triangle in the middle of the old part of town. Corner of 4th street and Ashworth.

Really easy to get to if you're not familiar with it... you can turn south onto 4th street from Hickman and go a few blocks, and it's on the left hand side of the road at the stop sign for Ashworth, right across the street from the Casey's.

I saw the link from the previous post about shops in Iowa. I went and talked to them last Monday and Chris Lund (one of the owners) came and got the car that night. Hopefully the car will be done this week.

I highly recommend everybody in the Des Moines / central IA area to check these guys out at least. Awesome shop with knowledgable guys who have been around Mustangs all their life. Also probably the only dyno in Iowa which is a major plus.

Is there any cruise nights in Des Moines that you guys go to, or even meets?

Keep us informed when you get it back, be nice to talk to someone who has experience with them before I go there.

There's at least one other dyno in Des Moines, at Midstate Machine ( http://www.automotivemachineshop.com/chassis_dyno.shtml ). I don't know if they're any good or not, I just know that they have a dyno.

And I haven't been on a single cruise or to any meets in my L. I've thought about going to Hardees on 9th/Army Post for the Friday night show they have, but I go out just about every Friday with friends who aren't car guys (one doesn't even have a car, the other two drive a neon and a cavalier), so I doubt they'd want to hang up there with me.

Got the car back from Lund Motorsports today and they did an excellent job for half the price of any other place that I called.

All I can say is those guys over there do great work, fun to talk to, and are all highly skilled at what they do. They will be my one and only shop which I'll trust for the vert. Once I gather a little more money, I'm definitely going to get the car retuned by Chris. I said before and I'll say it again, everybody should check them out at least.

It would be nice to meet some of you guys and check out what people have for cars.

What happened was...who ever installed the gears before I even purchased the car did not install them correctly.:mj: They did not use thread locker on the bolts holding the ring and pinion. One of the bolts fell out, and the other got into the ring and pinion teeth and got smashed in between the two and then shot out and cracked the case. This caused a major "clunking" sound as well as leaking from the housing.

At first I thought I broke the differential or a half shaft, but after they took it apart they figured out what happened. It totally sucks donkey nuts that it had to happen, but at least it is done correctly now. The price that I payed was great when compared so some of the quotes that I got based on my initial assumptions.

Glad to hear good things about Lund. I have recommended them to a few different people just on hearing good things about them. My buddy has a big block, tubbed mustang and he says chris always treats him good. If you are ever up there again as him about Eric Hockings Mustang, its a beast. They are all heading down to Eddyville tonight for Midnight Madness. I thought about going down but it is $8 ea to get in plus the $30 or so in fuel to get down there and back.

If there isn't a cruise going on maybe we could all meet up sometime and just get to know each other. I live in Altoona and we could always meet up at Prairie Meadow Casino.

I see that Wed. Sept 26 The Mustang Club of Central Iowa are having a cruise night at Sugar Shack in Altoona. It is right on the main drag by Hy-Vee. If anyone is interested in meeting up I am game to go up there and shoot the shit.

Or Sept 21 The Mustang Club of Central Iowa is meeting at southridge mall to cruise to lund motors and check out the shop and Chassis Dyno.

Let me know what you guys think

I just spent about a half hour talking with Bob Lund up there this morning, it was very promising. He was honest and upfront about the fact that they're still learning the ins and outs of dyno tuning, but he was very clear that they start out conservative and work their way up as they get a feel for it.

They had one of their fox bodies on it when I was there, and that red 01-02 L with the pest control stickers on it was there when I pulled in, but I didn't get a chance to talk to the owner before he left. Bob said they'd put some LFP long bars on it, and he was running some spray (but apparently he's running it without a tune).

After our conversation, I'm pretty comfortable about taking my truck there next spring/summer. If all goes well money-wise, I'll have them put my soon-to-be-purchased Hotchkis TVS on first, and if all goes well with that we'll start some pulley and tune work.

More than likely I'll get a mail order tune from amazon to give the Lund guys a place to start, then let them fine tune it on the dyno.

It would cool to meet some of you guys on this board and plus have a cruise night which would be cool since I'm normally all by myself when I cruise around.

Just name a time and place, I'll drive down from Ames for anything that'd be fun. We also don't have to go the mustag club stuff, we could do svtperformance cruise nights.

Also, glad to hear that people are at least checking out Lund Motorsports. Hopefully next yeat I'll be able to get the eaton ported and have them retune the car. I hope that I'll hit 520 or so, but that's a long time from now.

Well, im happy to hear that we have some happy customers out there.
As far as you guys comming out on the 21st that would be fine by us. I will caution you though. Waukee H.S. is having homecomming that night and im sure the PD will be out. The mustang club said they are expecting 15 to 20 cars so we should have a good crowd.
As far as we go. We have been here for 9 years and have built a couple of cars. We have built street/strip cars, road course cars, or just your daily driver. If you guys need parts, tuning, or help with a project shoot us an email [email protected] or call (515)987-8176. If you were curious about our Dyno it is a Superflow 30 Chassis Dyno with 2 Eddy Brakes. This allows us to handle up to 1500 or more RWHP. If you no any AWD guys tell them it is only one roller, SORRY. I hope this info helps and we see you on Friday.
