2012 Coupe - Bye Bye V6, Hello 427w

Built a 427ci Dart block Windsor, swap starts August 1 (picture was taken yesterday while we were test-fitting the headers and K-member)...

That motor (and a T56 Magnum XL trans) is going into this car, which is currently a V6/auto:

Is this motor considered a big block? I know the Cleveland version of the 351 is, but the windsor is considered a small block right?

Excellent! With the right suspension this would be a beast on the track!

Add lotsa pics for us car porn junkies.

None of the OEM suspension remains on the car (and it's got a Fays2 watts link in it), but I might have to improve the shocks/springs again since the car will weigh about 60 pounds more than a GT when I'm done. We're gonna weight it to see. Since I'm replacing the k-member and radiator brace with tubular parts, and running an aluminum flywheel, we may break even on the weight, but I'm not counting on that... We may also be able to drop the engine another 3/4 inch, so that will improve handling.

I can't wait to be able to change the emblems on the fenders. I got some nice polished stainless "427" emblems.

Damn that is so cool! Was it hard to mount up this engine to the BMR K-frame? Did you need to have the mounts fabricated or did you just buy them off the shelf? I assume its the S197 K-frame?

I got the mounts from American Muscle I think (I'll have to check). They're nothing more than 351w/302 solid mounts. The BMR K-member is made for this swap into a S197, so it should just bolt right up. So far, everything for mounting the engine and trans are off-the-shelf. The only fabrication required is:

0) Because I'm using a Dart block, I had to notch the driver's side motor mount to clear a water jacket boss on the #6 cylinder. The notch is about 3/4-by-3/16 inch. Stock 302/351w blocks do not require this modification. I'm not sure about the FRPP Boss blocks.

1) The transmission came as a kit (it's the Tremec Magnum XL for S197 Mustangs), and the bellhousing that came in the kit is for a mod motor, so I couldn't use it. Instead, I had to get a Quicktime bellhousing that was 15/16 too shallow, forcing me to have a 1-inch aluminum spacer made (local company cut it out on a waterjet). We MAY have to modify the cross-member, bt we won't know that until we get the powertrain in the car.

Of course, I'm going to have to have a driveshaft made, and make a complete custom exhaust, but all of that was expected.

As far as the exhaust is concerned, I got mid-length Fox-body headers from Accufab (you can see them in the photo in the first post) with 1-3/4 primaries and 3-inch collectors, a generic x-pipe kit from Summit, and some Moroso spiral-flow bullet mufflers. The plan is to run as much pipe behind the mufflers as needed to dump in front of the rear end. If we think it's too loud, I'll get a set of Pypes 3-inch catbacks, sell the mufflers from that kit, and adapt the rest to fit the car.

I took the rear and passenger seats out of the car, we're gotta take off the hood and front bumper tonight, and put blue painters tape on the top half of the fenders so we don't mess 'em up. That way, all I have to do is drive it to the shop tomorrow morning, and we can start right in on it. Should have the more/trans out by the end of the day. If the scheduling gods are smiling on us, we should have the new motor in by the middle of next week. We have some engine bay work that needs to be done that we want to do before we drop in the new engine.

curious what size AFR's those are and the cam specs. that DP will hold the power down a bit , but it should still be very stout.

AFR 205's, cam is a TrickFlow stage 3, and I'm using 1.7 rockers. I picked the intake based on intended use of the car, which doesn't necessarily involve drag racing.
