We had a similar problem years ago when my daughter would feed the dog. She would leave pebbles behind walking to the feed bowl. What a mess that turned into, getting a cat solved everything.

Look like the burrowing Norway rats we had in our shed! The Ratanator trap worked good. Live trap, they walk over a piece and cannot get out. Caught 7 that size, the first night, 4 the second. They give you a plastic tub to store the metal trap. Fill the plastic up with water, when you catch a few, throw trap in the water. All taken care of. Then I throw them in the front pasture, Ravens take care of the rest.
You need a couple barn cats. My friend raises goats and chickens and she has two barn cats that put in work. Definitely will help keep the rats under control.

Our Pyrenees dogs weren’t raised around cats and haves killed the last cats we had.
We have a lot of coyotes so the dogs are necessary.
