I grew up in Newark and there are still some nice parts, specifically the Ironbound section. Even the downtown has improved with all the new developments and the arena. You're photos are obviously coming from the project areas, near the vicinity of South Orange Ave and the like. There are far worse looking cities in NJ like Camden, Paterson, certain sections of Jersey City and Harrison.

A LOT of cities in the Northeast look like this. They all don't have the crime like Newark though. That's what happens to places when you tax the shit out of people so badly they move elsewhere.....NY has the highest % of flight in the country and it's because of all the taxes and the shit ass winters if you ask me.
