It a beautiful dream, but I'd probably avoid it. Think of all of the cars that are unsafe at speeds over 100mph on the roads today. In Germany they are used to the Autobahn and respect it. Here in America we'd see every ricer, dumbass, and horrid driver on the Autobahn. Do you want to be going 140+ and have some old man in a LeSabre switch lanes and end up right in front of you?

No thanks, I'll stick to the track.

People can't drive as it is.

Hell no. I don't want to be driving along and some dumbshit in a Toyota Corrolla loses control and causes a whole shit load of issues for everyone.

Its not everyone going 120mph that would bother me. Its those people that would get out there and continue to drive 50/65mph that would pose a danger. It sounds like a great idea, but there are alot more idiots over here to deal with than over in Germany, unfortunatly it would just be too damn dangerous...

Cops should really enforce impeding traffic laws. I could care less if some guy is going 10 over the limit on a 4 lane highway, but it gets annoying when you have two clusterf*cks going 35 side by side in a 45.

Some rules to live by:

1. Drive the f*cking speed limit, please
2. If you want to drive the limit, and other people want to go faster, GET THE F*CK INTO THE RIGHT LANE
3. Don't f*cking pass the person going only 1/4 of a mile an hour faster than them. I won't tell anyone if you have to slightly go over the limit to pass them.
4. I don't care if you pull out in front of me, even if I have to slow down for a few seconds, just so long as you go as fast or faster than me. If you go slower, expect me to ride your ass and give you the finger.

On a nice little sidenote, my friend was telling me how he was behind this slow bitch, the kid in the car that was riding with him picked up the airsoft pistol that he accidentaly left under the seat, and pointed it at the car. The driver saw that and pulled right the hell off heh.

Sinister ... you need to edit #4. F#ck wasn't in there. Didn't have as much emphasis as the other 3.

Many things would definatly have to change for this to happen:

1. No eating, cell phone use, or other distraction while driving.

2. Yearly inspections for high speed capability.

3. Not every car can get on it, a Kia is not made to do 120+.

4. Much much stricker licensing, similar too Germany.

5. Heavy enforcement of "drive right, pass left" laws.

6. Lots of funding to keep it in shape.

I'll edit it when I think of some others.

Good ideas...I'm actually writing a paper about this very same topic...it's amazing how things like this pop up when you're working on them.

i know a few of you have covered this already, but also look at the fact that in Germany the cost to even get a license is alot something like 1500-2000 per person. also i know they have very strict laws on the autobahn and strict laws to even get a license.

also keep this in mind that when Germany builds a road such as the autobahn they use almost 3 feet thick of concrete which prevents much of the damage we see here in the US as we use about 1 foot think

no disrespect to american cars or engineers, but german cars are engineered to go 150-200+ mph and survive an accident, hence the cost of those luxury imports. our american cars are not designed to such high standards and therefore most cars built would simply provide a death valley of a highway or minefield of accidents creating even more fatalities

true we all want speed and thrills, but if we want to fix the problem it really boils down to the cars and the drivers, too many american drivers cant drive worth shit

down here in south florida, the f*ing snowbirds are simply unguided missiles, you have people who cant see over the steering wheel being issued licenses, absolute bullsht

but in the state run by those in heaven's waiting room, no disrespect to any of our elderly family members, but this would be the cause for massive problems

one other little fact is that several years ago Montana had a speed policy that was similar to the autobahn in that the max speed was that of reasonable for conditions: so many europeans and americans went up there with supercars and there were numerous fatalities due to this as american roads and cars are not specifically designed for this

excuse the rambling here but after driving in florida for 6 years you basically want to kill off half the drivers and each year gets worse

yes i want an autobahn but not without strictly enforsing a new drivers license law and strictly enforse how people drive

Remember its ok in germany to drive on the autoban at 200mph and pass a cop without a problem, but the minute you pass on the right you will be pulled over

hope this sheds some light on the issue and excuse me if i happen to offend anyone in this rambling

My parents have driven on the autobahn (and I rode along with em) back when my dad was stationed there. Maybe americans got special previlages but I dont remember anyone having to pay an ungodly ammount for any special license's to get to drive...

I do remember them barraling down the autobahn in that little rented escort with the acellerator pushed all the way to the floor keeping a constant pace of about 200KPH (around 120mph)... when you'ed come up on someone that was driving slower than you, and you'ed pull out to pass, you better get out and get right back in because someone who looks like a dot in your rear view mirror, by the time you've flipped on your signal to pull out, they are right on your ass. (esspecially the Porches and Mercedes)

Not really... at 150 to 200mph, I remember seeing alot of video's and footage of accidents over in germany while I lived there... They fly apart at that speed just as bad as the next car.

I'd say about 95% of the time there was an accident on the autobahn, it was fatal. No ammount of engineering is going to save you as your cars sucked off the road and down a hill for some reason or another, as your doing 180mph... The only thing that might save you while wiping out that quick would be a roll bar, and I know a good deal, luxery benz'es esspecially, do not have them.

Thanks for bringing that up....I like german cars just as much as the next guy but not many cars are going to save a person at those speeds.

thats what i was gonna say boom....most cars are rated as VERY SAFE but they are rated at speeds of what? 55mph? yeah they are stable at 150...but not necessarily safe...nothing can save you from physics...

I'm going to have to go with the majority on this one and say that as much as I would love an Autobahn style freeway system here, without some serious overhauling of how Americans drive and are licensed, it would be a deathtrap. Here in Utah, it is a daily adventure to navigate the maze of stupidity, ignorance and bad driving skills of 95% of the populace.

I would love to legally open up my cobra somewhere, I'm just too afraid of getting caught doing 150 mph. I just wanna see what's like.
