“It’s skill,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in response to a question on “60 Minutes” Sunday from Charlie Rose as to why the company’s products are made in China.

Rose clearly wasn’t buying it. “They have more skills than American workers? They have more skills than German workers?” he pressed.

“The U.S., over time, began to stop having as many vocational kind of skills,” Cook explained. “I mean, you can take every tool and die maker in the United States and probably put them in a room that we’re currently sitting in. In China, you would have to have multiple football fields.”

Earlier in the interview, the conversation heated up just a bit when the subject turned to allegations that Apple AAPL, +0.54% is a “tax avoider” and is “engaged in a sophisticated scheme” to shelter the $74 billion in revenue parked overseas.

“That is total political crap,” Cook fired back. He said he’d “love to bring it home” but doesn’t because “it would cost me 40%... and I don’t think that’s a reasonable thing to do. This is a tax code, Charlie, that was made for the industrial age, not the digital age. It’s backwards. It’s awful for America. It should have been fixed many years ago. It’s past time to get it done.”

Cook also defended the company on the thorny issue of encryption, showed off Apple’s future headquarters and, again, talked about why he came out of the closet.

The show didn’t reveal much in the way of headline-making news, like sales data on the Apple Watch or the outlook for driverless cars. The world’s most valuable company — and also one of its most secretive — knows how to control the message. Rose conceded as much after the interview.

“They don’t put the story out there until they have decided it IS the story they want to tell,” he said.

While fans surely enjoyed the view from the inside, others were unimpressed.

Meanwhile, toyota, nissan, bmw, mercedes benz, tesla and several other world class companies are building product in the USA. I wonder if he even believes the crap coming out of his mouth. :smmon:

They are doing things to benefit the company. To make $$$$$$. Can you blame them?

If they find loop holes and prefer to employee a cheaper foreign worker, do they not have a right to do so?

Apple is not the first guy on the block to do this. I agree it would be great to employ Americans, but come on. Really think they are gonna throw all that coin away, just so they can say it was "Made in USA"?

Just my 2 cents....as I type this from my iPhone.

I wouldnt say Chinese works are more skilled then US workers, they are cheaper though and will do just as good a job.

Also Apple is a tax evader but so is every company listed on Fortune 500. They all do it to some degree, some are better then others though.

Its not against the law so..................

Every single product in my industry made in the states is riddled with quality control issues so I believe it's possible in that industry. Americans belittled trade skills for so many decades that we're no longer known for it.

I don't think belittled is the right word. For 20yrs, American manufacturing was destroyed and along with it many trade related careers were looked upon as a terrible career choice.

What I can't figure out is why liberals/millennials/hipsters fawn over the evil, greedy profiteer Apple?

And Tim Cook did a good job deflecting several questions. His main job as CEO is to enrich himself and shareholders, I'd say he's doing a pretty good job. I personally have never owned an Apple anything, I like my money.

Not sure what you would claim as "tax evasion."

Many companies invert because they make more money oversees, yet they pay local tax and if they re-patriot the money they will pay tax again in the US.

It's the same with you buying online. If a company has no physical presence in your state and you buy out of state, you pay no sales tax. Are you "avoiding" tax?

Hell, we fought a war of independence over this.

What he is doing is no worse than what I did to save as much capitol as possible.

When I started my company I bought property in Nevada and pay my taxes there.

Why? because California no only won't let me own the guns (and machine guns) I want but they want to charge me 10%+ right off the top on my income.

It's bad enough that when I am in California I have to pay the highest gasoline tax, highest city tax, phone tax, internet tax and so on of any state in the USA.

I see nothing wrong in voting against the USA's corporate taxes by moving your factories and headquarters offshore and saving billions. Want in on it? Buy the stock.

And did someone compare some auto manufacturers to Apple? Do a little research on the location of those factories and they were awarded GIGANTIC tax and fee saving for putting their factories in those states.

What was in it for the states? Taxes and standard of living for the workers. That were formerly unemployed in many cases.

I'd have some respect if he was honest and said profits are paramount and it would eat into profits if the price of goods were not increased to offset the higher wages an American would receive over a Chinese sweatshop worker.

He's not totally wrong. Easy to get college loans have created a generation of 17th Century French literature post graduates where we could have had diesel mechanics and millwrights. However, screwing an iMac together is not a high skill job. If you can re-tread a tire you can put together a consumer electronic in a factory setting. Manufacturing in China is still done primarily for low costs.

As for the taxes, we all know the entire tax code is a cat 5 shit storm. Nothing new there.

What I can't figure out is why you seem to think only those 3 groups of people fawn over Apple. Do you really think your political affiliation has any correspondence to who buys apple products or fawns over them? If you do, then I've got some oceanfront property in Nebraska that I'd love to sell you.

Business is Business.

Tax kills Business. But makes others rich.

Communists, Socialists, etc, leaders all "sell" their ideas to the masses to capitalize on something.

Clintons, net worth $150,000,000.

Fidel Castro, net worth around $950,000,000. How did that happen? The anti Capitalist.

As much as i want to think he's full of shit, deep down inside i think there may be SOME truth to what he says.

The workers that assemble their products aren't college graduates, at least i dont think they are. Id imagine it would be a pretty entry level job. Here in America the majority of people in that position are ****ing morons.

I work in a large injection molding and manufacturing plant. 90% of the entry level workers (inspector packers) are idiots and lazy. The same shit you see at urban area fast food places.

Its a win/win for Apple. You get equal and likely high quality workers at a far lower cost. They'd actually be pretty stupid to do it any other way.

Which one of the three are you and how many times have you stood in line at an apple store with all the other drones to buy the latest device? I didn't say those were the only 3 groups that are apple freaks either, nice try BTW.

Liberals like things that make them feel warm and fuzzy (do gooder syndrome) and I can't figure out how an evil profiteering company like Apple makes them feel that way.

Just one example, from a far left source no less.

All this being said, I think Apple makes nice products and have created their own cult following, I've just never been willing to buy in like the drones that follow them.

Actually I've never stood in line. I don't need to have the newest thing instantly as soon as it comes out. You didn't say that but you singled them out like they were the only ones. I know more conservatives that fawn over and stand in line for the latest apple products than I do liberals.

It appears republicans buy just as much apple products as democrats do.

Nothing like the threat of death to keep quality in check.

Seriously,

Quality is better per dollar paid, someone has to be on the low end of the pay scale.

Don't worry, when the US goes belly up our population will pay and then some. I just hope the populace remembers who is to blame in the end.

As a shareholder, I agree 100% with Cook. Chinese workers are more skilled than American, and that includes CEO's.

When is the Apple Board gonna lay Cook's sorry ass off?

That gas tax honor goes to NY.
