I have a weird tick noise coming from behind my dashboard. It make the tick in every gear under light throttle and between 1800rpm and 2200 rpm. When I put a little more foot into it I dont hear it. And you can only hear it from inside the car, not outside it. Also it only does it when the car is moving. On my way home from work I was traveling around 40mph I threw it in neutral and reved it up to 2k and I heard the tick, took it up to 3k and dropped it to neutral and no tick. I did it at 60, 30, 50, and 20mph and still got the tick everytime. When I got home, parked it, and reved it up to 2k and no tick.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Background on the car...

1996 Mystic Cobra
31k miles
K&N Intake
Kenwood headunit

I just noticed this same tick in my car today. Also a 96 Cobra, I also have a blown head gasket I just found out and my starter motor is more than likely shot. Hopefully you will have neither of those two problems anytime soon.

Definitely neither of those two, no smoke and starts right up every time

Good luck with your car

Which side of the dashboard?

Two things that it could be:

PCV valve (I'd recommend a FORD plastic OEM unit, rather than the aftermarket metal ones)
Throw Out Bearing (TOB) - Try adjusting your clutch adjuster for more slack (slightly loose pedal) and see if that fixes it.

btw, from your mention of RPMs when it occurs most, I think it most likely to be a PCV valve.

In that case, I suppose it could be one of these:

Injector tick
Bad plug (cracked ceramic)
Incorrectly plugged in plug wire (not seated properly)
Leaking header to H pipe gasket (passenger side only)

Thank you for all your input, your giving me things to check that I wouldn't have thought to check.

It's really weird because it does it only when the car is moving. On my way home from work I was traveling around 40mph I threw it in neutral and reved it up to 2k and I heard the tick. This is the weirdest thing I've ever experienced with a car.

My bet is he is off on the RPMs

It happens at 3250 when the HS FP relay kicks on. Same time as the IMRCs open.

The relay is right behing the glove box closest to the center of the dash.

I got the same thing. Only at light cruise, lower RPM. Put a load on it and its gone.

Almost sounds like its pinging.

My car is Procharged and IMRC delete. Has a PCV though which I plan to remove.

Sounds like I'm experiencing the same thing but mine only does it between 1-2k RPMs and only on takeoff. Once I pass 2k, its all good.
