I just can't see myself spending that much on a DD that will depreciate steeply.

Exactly.
you beat me too it, damn.
OP keeps saying that the 2nd row being a bench is a deal breaker. Is it not an option on the 18/19s? My 13 Xsport had captain chairs. My current 18 Platinum doesn't. I've looked at the 20 XST and in my current situation not worth losing the money on the 18 for the upgrade. If I didn't have one, I'd probably get the ST but it would need moveable pedals for my short wife.
I haven’t found an Explorer Sport with captains chairs. Plus the exhaust gas in the cab issue with that generation is of concern.
We have a 13' Sport with 2nd row captains, and no exhaust fumes either.

It's been over a year since I worked for ford but if I remember correctly the exhaust fume issue was strictly police models but they expanded the recall to civilian models for customer satisfaction due to customer concerns.
Edit* a quick google search shows customer complaints even after recall was performed so who knows. Wouldn't surprise me if ford was trying to sweep an issue under the rug
I was a tech at a Ford dealership in 13-14 when they were trying to figure out the issue and I was on the team that was trouble shooting it. We had plenty of civilian Explorers come through. We did everything from taping every single door and window gap to completely blocking the HVAC system to resealing the trunk area with silicone and filling the crush cans with expanding foam (which became the TSB/recall fix IIRC). One in particular was so bad that it would made your eyes water during the test drive.

Holy Jesus. Talk about life threatening.
With the bad taste for Ford in my mouth, I put up a very innocuous/respectable post about our issues, and the car we bought to get rid of the Ford. A lot of friends did not realize the truck was gone so thats why I made the post.Dads dealer texted him within 5 minutes and said "Hate to see this, is what it is".
I think even Dealers are getting tired of the poor quality issues. Doesn't help them sell cars. If I was a family man and my brand new explorer filled up with exhaust fumes and I had my baby in the back, I'd be livid.
Meh shit happens with every manufacturer is what it is at least it was under warranty.

Pad slap, but wont replace cheap rotors? Lexus would at least let us machine the rotors and scuff the pads. If under 60%, then the customer is SOL.I believe this is why the new explorer and the cop cars in the later years all have turn down exhaust pipes. The new Explorer ST has fake exhaust tips and they dump the exhaust downward.
I know a friend who has had two of the PP explorer's and his first one had just straight out exhaust while his new one has turn downs. They did not do the foam fill fix on his new one. I assume the revised mufflers push the exhaust down and out from the rear bumper as there was concern the bumper was "scooping" the exhaust and pushing it up through the rubber body exhausters in the rear of the truck.
He also complains of brake shudder like every few weeks. They keep replacing the pads but wont put new rotors on it. Its been a techline case for like 5 months.

The tablet isn't bad, imo, but the bezels around it are straight out of 20 years ago. The screen should go to the edge. It looks very old and out of place.
I have a 15 SHO (paid $22K with 2 years and 20K miles on the clock) and I have no idea why Ford doesn't put the hipo 3.5 in these cars/lifted wagons. Just because I need a 4 door family vehicle doesn't mean I don't want 450hp 500ft-lb mustang GT level of power.
Better to get a Durango SRT if you need a lifted wagon with power.
