Anyone in here play in tournaments or just for fun? What is your biggest winnings? Any tips for new players? I just recently started playing on a regular basis with some guys I work with. Usually just a $10 buy in. Largest pot I've won was only $70. We really just play for fun. Thinking about branching out and trying my luck playing in some of these tournaments they have in the area for a bit more money.

I used to play alot with friends on the weekends. Most I've won is $250. Played at the casino for the first time 2 weeks ago. Got taken out on the river card but thats how it goes sometimes.

I play as much as i can.

Biggest tips i can give you are, dont give a tell. You will be surprised how many people i can pick up on their bluffs or if they have a real hand, even when they are betting.

Being able to bluff will also help you greatly.

o ya, and dont be stupid and play EVERY hand. If you are big blind you are paying to see the flop so obviously hold tight. If no one bets and you are still holding onto those shitty cards let it ride. You now get to see the turn/river for free. I cannot tell you how many people i see that fold, and they could have stayed in all the way to the river.

What's that mean, "don't give a tell"?

Some people have a "tell".

A tell is an expression on your face, if you lean toward the table, if you slump back, rub your nose, look in a certain direction.

If you were to get your cards and you tried to play it cool and leaned towards the table like you are real interested in this hand, you prob have a good hand.

If you look at the cards and slump back in your chair maybe you have a bad hand...maybe you are bluffing, lets see how you bet.

Best advise, look at your cards once, and put them on the table. No need to keep looking at them they wont change. Act normal. Its hard to advise you on how to act, most people know how i am so my reaction i try to make the same 100% of the time. My usual poker face is a blank face/stare.

Most of the time in poker, im not playing the cards in my hands, im trying to figure out what you have, who has the best hand at the table (if its not me make sure you think its me) and see how much money i can sucker you into by the river.

I play quite a bit. I usually play live tourneys around $100. The most Ive won in one sitting was around 3k in a tourney at the Hard Rock. Cash and tourneys require different strategies. I favor tourneys over cash games cause it fits my playing style much better.

For someone new I suggest to read as much about hold'em as you possibly can. Once you're comfortable on some basic strategy you can start playing online for a few bucks. Mind you, people play completely idiotic at lower level stakes but it's good to get a good amount of hands under your belt before you start playing for larger stakes.

Playing live is also a completely different animal than playing online as well. I wouldn't worry too much about tells when you're starting off, I would stick to just worrying about making solid plays. As you gradually play more you start noticing things that you never noticed before.

Nice, that's a hell of an accomplishment! I would love to hit one of those tourneys up. PLO hi/low has been the most profitable cash game for me.

Play almost every night, small no limit tables. Couple nights ago I had 4 flushes in 7 hands. Cleared out most of the table haha

When are we gonna tag team some tables? I stick with the .5/1 NL and do pretty well.

I play often to. you really need to get to learn the basics. there's good advice from fellow member already here. you also need to learn about calculating how many outs you have in each particular hand. that generally lets you know what your odds are of winning before you try and cut through the b/s and skills of the other players around you. the more time you spend consistently playing, the more skills you acquire.

Play good hands. If your playing more than the 20% you are playing bad starting hands. Dont be afraid to fold a ace six offsuit. Specially if there are a lot of players in the hand.

I dont like following bets on draws. If you are trying to make a hand bet it as a bluff, and raise to win(not just a call to stay in the hand). You can throw away a lot of cash trying to make hands only to fold later in that same hand. Dont have a hand bet like you do(bluff) or fold.

Watch your opponents. The good players play based on what others have. If you can read your opponents, you can win a lot of pots and fold when needed.

I've been playing on Jokerstars for about 5 years now. I'm still using the original $200 I put on too! Biggest tournament I won was I believe an $8 buy in with 180 ppl. Winnings were about $400.

If you only play the low buy in tournaments (under $10) you can do fairly well. I've played several $20+ games and usually the results aren't so good. You can definitely see a shift in skill when the stakes go up.

I know full tilt has the option to set up private tournaments. We can have like an SVTP poker tournament or w.e. Would anyone be interested in something like that?
