99 Vert renewal - this will be fun - Updated 3/9/13

My 99 was totaled in July. It had an eaton swap and built IRS. So I bought it back from the insurance company and dis-assembled it. Some of the parts went on a replacement (03 vert) and the rest went into storage for possible future use.

My 99 coupe before it was totaled. It had 38K on it. :(

Its present form.

Well the future arrived Friday in the form of a 136K mile 99 Cobra Convertible. Dad found it in Alabama and brought it down for us to work on. It is going to need some serious TLC.

The paint is shot, it actually just comes off with a razor. I think Ford messed up the original with some poor surface preparation. Bad or negatively charged primer... The plan is to move a lot of the black parts over and go all black with a black top.

Yes, those are dumps - originally electronically controlled, but apparently it fell off on the highway somewhere.

Plans for it include an 03 engine, T-56, rebuilt IRS, charcoal interior and a black top. The engine, transmission and IRS will be from the totaled 99.

I started taking it apart today, plan is to drop the IRS tomorrow

It has been rebuilt, the cross-axis joint boots are almost new. I also found a Ford parts wrapping on the right lower control arm. Brake rotor was shot and the right side parking brake cable was disconnected and e-clip missing.

Left side:

Note the condition of the cross-axis joint on the knuckle; the rubber boots are completely trashed. 136K of wear and tear....

3 of the tires are a brand I've never heard - Zeno UHP / Strata's - H rated from China.

This is going to get interesting.....

I called SVT today to see if they knew what top was originally on the car. I could only get the paint and interior (ZF and Parchment). If anyone knows how to get that info, please drop me a line.

The IRS is out. It gets easier the third time :) The car must have had some damage in the past as the right (passenger) side of the IRS has been rebuilt. Strangely enough, the passenger side caliper slide bolts were 14mm, the driver side was 13mm. The driver's side spring still had the iso's, the passenger side didn't. It seems I am opening a Forrest Gump box of chocolates.

Time to tighten it up with some MM and FTBR stuff.

Good times

Did some cleaning/dis-assembly of the IRS. The right side has been definitely rebuilt. Whoever rebuilt it put it together incorrectly and used the wrong axle nut. Here are some pictures.

Driver's side IRS knuckle...I'm thinking the cross-axis joints are done.

Closeup of the replaced axle nut. So far it has resisted all attempts at removal.

This is the passenger side toe link rod...needless to say its been replaced.

The transmission is out. It looks like in addition to the replacement engine, its a replacement transmission. Also, a quick inspection of the engine mounts show them broken. Man, she was rode hard and put away wet.

No better time to change out the fuel filter. At least there is no rust...its the small victories :)

Got some good work done today.

Dad is installing the T-56 bell housing and needed a bigger hammer...lol. The T-56 by the way goes in much easier than taking out the T-45.

Its a trailer load of parts for the T-56/IRS replacement. My dog just had to run "in frame" :)

file_zpsc1e66d9f.jpg

As we were getting the T-56 ready to install, we noticed the shift fork had taken some damage during the accident. So we took it off, worked on it and cleaned it up for reinstallation. While we were working on it, we check the TOB and found this. I don't think its supposed to spin "out of round". Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I had a spare for my 03, so we just used it. Strangely enough, the bearings still spin smoothly. I can't imagine the force it took to do that. Note to self, check EVERY part to be reinstalled from the wrecked 99.

Now I'm just waiting for some updated parts for the IRS.

Not a bad pick up. At least you have some swap parts from your totalled car so you can save some money. I'd keep it white w/ a black top and charcoal interior. Some 01 or 03/04 seats would look better than the 99 seats. Look at the pics that were posted earlier in this thread. Black top on white body looks awesome.

Weekend update after Thanksgiving and football. We're still waiting on a couple parts from FTBR, so I had some time to clean up the individual pieces of the IRS.

99 Pumpkin with 3.73's, Steeda diff brace and a Torsen T2. I also had the MM aluminum diff mount from the other 99.

Big Brown dropped off the goodies yesterday, so the rebuild commences.

Pumpkin back in the subframe. FTBR aluminum front diff bushings, Steeda diff brace, KB forward torque brace and MM aluminum rear diff mount. I don't think its gonna move. Diff geared with 3.73's and a Torsen T2 LSD.

Friday Update:
Got most of the IRS back together, I still have to torque everything appropriately and cut the rear springs before we re-install it.

The IRS knuckles have replacement cross axis joints. Axles are 99 Cobra heavy duty made by Raxles. FTBR swaybar endlinks are very nice.

Weekend update: Got the IRS installed, rear calipers and rotors from the wrecked 99 and torqued everything down. Bled the brakes and hooked up the emergency brake - painful. Installed the 03 driveshaft and then went to install the wrecked 99's stock H-pipe.......hmm where is the driver's side O2 sensor connector..keep reaching around the transmission...no luck. Finally we determine that the sensor connection had slipped in between the bell housing and the transmission during the installation. ------------:bash: Crap, so out comes the driveshaft and shifter. We got lucky and only had to slide the T-56 back a little bit to get the sensor wire out. So an hour later, its all bolted back together. Here are some pics:

From all the stuff we have found, this car has led a tough and I'm sure very interesting life.

This is why we are replacing the interior..
