I do not work for Ford or in any way derive income from any Ford associations. I just know what I see first hand. Unlike your engineer friend, I have no horse in this race. But I know what I see, and it says your friend is FOS.
If the problem was really on Ford's end, why did they bother to take legal action against Navistar in order to get out of the engine deal they had through CY 2011 so they could move on to their own in-house developed diesels? Ford got burned big-time by Navistar and wanted control back, plain and simple.
When it boils right down to it, Ford is a much bigger, broader reaching company with far more engineering resources than Navistar. Ford is one of the world's biggest R&D spenders of any company on the planet regardless of industry. Ford has direct access to diesel tech that is years ahead of Navistar (FoE). Bottom line: anything Navistar can do, Ford can do better. Navistar hasn't built a decent "light-duty" diesel since the 7.3 PS/T444E, and that has nothing to do with Ford.
