We run cheapo coil overs in our lemons 91 escort. Want to run champ, but I worry about tech vs lemons, especially on the cage. Also, we went to coil overs to save a few bucks with the stock struts, but it does appear that we will get hit hard on points for pinching pennies. Do you guys have a solid tech contact for the change questions. Ive been on the site, but curious about interpretations.

Id say a very solid choice. Id definitely try to get them as low as possible. If you could get it for $800-1000 i think it would be a great contender.

It also sounds like its in great mechanical shape(clutch, transmission...) so the big items i had to replace might be good for a while on this Escort.

Do you have any qualms with staying with the stock Zetec engine? You can optimize stock by porting everything you can and just slapping a cheap intake/exhaust on it. Put the budget money into the suspension, brakes and safety items.

I have been told all technical questions about safety gear go to Jay Mauney - [email protected]. He is the tech inspector for ChumpCar and will be your best bet for any cage questions. You can also post up photos on the ChumpCar forum and they will critique it for you.

If you passed LeMon's tech you should be good to go on the Chump Car series. The Lemon's cage requirements are more stringent than Chump Car, especially with regards to a back brace and the door bars.

No plans, I was just scrolling through CL for interesting stuff.

Due to a family emergency this past weekend i couldnt get to the shop to finish the mechanical installs and get the cage measured. So im planning this weekend(barring any more at home problems) to head over and get everything measured up for the cage so i can finally order the thing. I also will get the coilovers installed, bushings for the front cradle/sway bar installed along with braided brake/clutch lines.

Updates to come.

I had to sign in just to say keep up the good work on the car. I have been trying to get some friends to get into this, but they always seem to lose interest when they realize it costs more than the entry fee to go drag racing...

It can be tough being the only person in the group who likes races that involve turning haha

Get them to try an autocross or two. If they get hooked let them know that LeMon's/Chump is longer, more intense and even more fun.

Got a little time this weekend to work on the Elantra.

Installed new braided clutch line. Its meant for a DSM but it works for the Elantra/Tiburon. Its a bit long so just going to have to zip tie the rest out of the way.

Also installed new sway bar bushings up front along with braided front brake lines.

Ordered the fire suppression system, electrical cutoff switch and switch mounting plate on the LeMon's website. They have great prices on the equipment needed to enter just about any series. We also got a window net from Racequip along with a GM style buckle mount.

We hope to start getting the cage installed next week.

Electrical cut off switch and mounting panel came in on friday. Also, the spreader plates for the cage showed up from S&W. Checking the Fedex tracking i see the rest should be delivered this week. We have an autocross on Saturday but Sunday we will be starting the final stages of the safety items for this car. Cage, belts, window net, electrical cut off and fire suppression incoming.

I also need to spend a day and install the coil overs, replace 1 lower radiator hose and bleed the clutch and brakes again.

Pictures to come when we get a good day to tackle the car.

Update!

Gutted trunk, doors and air conditioning system from the car this past week/weekend. Cleaned up some wiring but have a ton more to remove. Car is getting lighter by the day.

ERW roll cage is being replaced by a DOM 1 3/4" cage which will far exceed any and all governing bodies. We want to take this thing to every event we possibly can and alot will not allow a car with an ERW cage to enter. So, we used the ERW cage to mock up the install, changed a few measurements and resent our measurements to S&W for a new DOM cage to be bent up. Cant thank S&W enough for the great service. They have answered all my questions and helped tremendously.

On to the pics!

Engine bay minus air con. Front lights are taped up for front end spray painting. Going to hopefully match the rest of the car with "champagne" color Krylon. So far it looks close to matching. Photos to come when painting is done.
IMG_4849.JPG

Front door cut out by Mr J. He doesnt have the steadiest hand.....(the top will be covered by closed cell foam padding)
IMG_4850.JPG

Rear door cut out by yours truly. Looks damn near perfect if i say so myself.(not to dig too much at Mr J)
IMG_4851.JPG

Trunk cut out by Mr M who did a fantastic job at not completely destroying the outer skin of the car. Besides the thing being flimsy as hell the trunk got stupendously light by removing the inner structure. It might weigh 10lbs now with everything that was removed.
IMG_4853.JPG

Wiring being removed from the dash. Going to yank the column and dash bar for the cage install so we can clean up and remove all the wiring not needed at that time. More pictures to come as the dash bar comes out.

The ass end of this hunk of korean cheese. Nicknamed it "Kim Jong Hyun" for now. We will see if it sticks.

More work this past weekend. Removed the heater/ac box from under the dash, yanked the dash bar to remove the extra bracketry and modify it for the cage to fit. Also got about 90% of the floor insulation removed. Doors have been wrapped up front to reduce the chance of a cut. Look like shit but they will work to protect the fingers from removal.

UPDATE! Finally got the cage welded in. Sputnik Racing - of LeMon's 24 fame - came to the rescue and offered to weld it in for a great price. They had it welded together and in the car in less than 2 days. Really appreciate them dealing with all my questions and taking photos.

Main hoop with downbar.
