My goal is to be between 450-500 HP and be streetable and durable... I'll start off by listing the parts I do plan to get, but first let me tell you a little about the engine.... I was lucky enough to get my hands on a 1970 351W motor from a 1970 Mach 1.... From what I hear these are great blocks... The block will be tested to make sure there is no warping or etc... Now here are the engine specs for those who need to know specific numbers..
Also, my car has the year and car correct 4V intake manifold instead of the 2V..

The 1970 Mustang Mach 1 351 W motor as follows :
351 CID (5.8 Liters)

Engine Type: 8 cylinder -90 degree OHV

Engine foundry group: Windsor

Bore: 400" Stroke: 3.50"

Horsepower (Gross): 250 BHP@ 4,600 RPM

Torque: 355 lbs/ft. @ 2600 RPM

Compression Ratio: 9.5 to 1

Fuel reccomended (atleast 94 Octane)

Carburetor : Autolite 2100 (2V) 350 CFM

Engine Firing Order: 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8

Camshaft Type: Hydraulic

Camshaft Specs :
*Duration (Intake): 256 Degrees
*Duration (exhaust): 270 Degrees
*Lift: (Lobe/int) .260" Lift (Lobe/exh) .278" lift
(Valve/int) 425" lift (Valve/exh) 450"
*Overlap 33 degrees..

Cylinder Head Specs

*Combustion Chamber(Volume): 58.9CC- 61.9CC (Quench Type)

*Valve Diameter: (Intake) 1.834"-1.849" (exhaust) 1.533"-1.548"

*Port size (WxH): (Intake) 1.76" x 1.94" (exhaust) .96" x 1.24"

Valve Train: Hydraulic non-adjustable multi groove valve stem locks..

Nominal weight of engine : 510 lbs..

Sorry for the long post...

I first posted this in the al carte tuning area and I apologize if I made a booboo posting the same thing here.. just thought it fit better here... I am kind of crunched for time also since the car will be ready for the motor and tranny to go in not to long from now...

Now here are the parts I am set on so far..

Eagle rotating assembly 408 W
Eagle Specialty Products B14125030 - Eagle Competition Rotating Assemblies - Overview - SummitRacing.com

I originally had my heart set on a Comp-Cams HiEnergy retrofit cam, Victor Jr Intake manifold and AFR185 heads.... But on another site I was informed by 2 seperate people that all I need to do to make my goal is the stroker kit.. To me this doesn't seem right.. People seem to believe these cars where under rated and I don't believe that either.... The intake manifold on this car looks to be restrictive to me and I am almost sure I'll need atleast that along with the stroker kit.... Any help is appreciated, thanks..

You will be really happy with a 408 stroker. They are torque monsters.

My Mach was originally a 351w car, but was swapped out to a 351C 4 barrel during it's rotisserie resto a few years ago. I kinda wish it had been left a Windsor motor though, as I am just going to swap out the Cleveland for a stroked Windsor someday anyway. I'm a bigger fan of the 351w. And, you are correct... the 2 barrel intake is really restrictive.

In 1970 the only way to get a Windsor was with a 2 barrel carb. The 351w 2 barrel was the base motor for the 1970 Mach 1. The 4 barrel 351 option switched over to a Cleveland.

I am aware of this which is why I found it wierd that it has the 4V intake manifold... I looked up the Cast # and it matches 1969 and 1970 351 W motor cast specs.. here is a pic and link showing the cast # year.. Very interesting... The 2V manifold cast #'s where C90E-9425-C or F.. Mine is
C90E-9425-E.. Could it be possible they sent out a 4V windsor?

Here is the link.. Scroll down to C90E-9425-E

Only thing I can think is that it is this motor..
351 Windsor & Cleveland Engine Specs

Maybe they had some 4V's left over from 1969 and popped it in this car? I also have a 70 Mach 1.. That or someone swapped out the manifold right after they got the car or atleast that same year.... Anyway.. The 4V windsor from 69 was rated at 300HP and 380 TQ.. Nice #'s if they are accurate... I also noticed the HP ratings for the Windsor and cleveland are all the same even the RPM's.. Which leads me to believe there was some fudging of numbers....

I'm going to put my engine on an engine stand and go through it with a fine toothed comb checking all the numbers.. this is def interesting...

Yea, there is a couple of possibilities for that intake being on your motor. If the car was an early '70 it could have been a left over 4 barrel setup from the '69 model year. Or, being that the motor is over 40 years old... a previous owner could have easily upgraded the 1970 2V intake to the '69s 4V intake.

Even that cast iron intake is restrictive, and heavy, compared to the numerous aftermarket intakes available.

Yeah, thanks.. Gonna put it on the engine stand and get all the #'s and do some research.. anyway.. Going to get the block checked for structural well being and then start my build.. Going to go with a Forged 408 W rotating assembly, RPM Air gap Intake Manifold #7581, Performer Hydraulic Roller Cam and lifters #2281, Holley Carb, Performer E-CNC Heads #79259 and Performer link timing set #7820.. The numbers are all edelbrock Parts numbers for those who are looking for a budget 450+ HP 408 windsor.. With these parts and rotating assembly I am looking at 450+ HP for $3,121.74 Not including tax or gaskets or bolts.. Edelbrock claims 450HP and 433 TQ from this power package with a 9.5/1 351 W.. I'll be running atleast that compression with a 408 so we will see what the numbers turn out to be with the extra Cubes ;).. Stay tuned :pop:

I'm sure someone just swapped a 4v intake onto the engine. If it were an early build there is a small possibility that some guy got who was at work and drunk slapped a 4v onto a 2v 351W, but that is not as likely. I have an original M code 69 Mach 1 and it was ok stock, nothing to write home about. If you figure the net horsepower the 290 rated horsepower was probably more like 240hp net. The 1/4 mile time of 14.9 from tests when the car was new seems to support this.

That 408 will make you very happy though! I decided to go 460/4spd with my car. So we will see how it all turns out.
