got a buddy looking to make a move from the lsx camaro world finally, and hes looking at the following-
08 shelby gt500 -intake,pulley,exhaust,tune
2011 gt 6 speed 5.0 stock.
and a 03 cobra with a whipple and supporting mods

his goal is a weekend warrior, something that can conquer the street locally, take to track at time, and cruise down to the beach and take road trips with the gf with no issues.
what do u think is the better choice? also will be looking for head turning appeal and value down the road. i gave my answer but i wanna see if it matches up with everyone elses

Honestly, I'd go with the 03/04 Cobra.

You can find a cheap one in the low $20K range (cheaper than the 5.0 & GT500), they can be made fast easily, make a ton of power with few mods, motors are built to handle that power, and they are the meanest looking mustangs ever produced IMHO.

I like the new 5.0's as DD's and everyday cars. They are pleanty fast out of the box, but I've heard they are really expensive to mod outside of your basic bolt-ons. Sure, you can put n2o on it, but it doesnt come with factory forged internals, so its not going to be as strong as the 03/04's.

As for the GT500's, I have nothing but love for them, but I'd still take a 03/04 cobra over one (flame suit on). I've seen some pullied/full exhaust GT500's for low 30's that were used. I'd definately get a used GT500 before a new 5.0. I'm partial to the new edge's. An 03/04 Cobra has been one of my dream cars since they've came out. I think theyre the best "bang for the buck" car out of the three mentioned. I'm not taking anything away from the 5.0's and GT500's, but you can build a 03/04 cobra cheaper than you could buy a GT500 or 5.0 for. Not to mention they are still a head turner (maybe not as much as a GT500, but they certainly get the job done!)

any other advantages of the shelby over the 03?

A GT-500 can just have a 2.8KB or a 3.4 Whipple thrown on it and run 10s. Seen it done... not saying a 2003/2004 Cobra can't do it but the GT-500 is also running a 5.4l vs a 4.6l. I have 3 friends who have a '03 Cobra and they are unbelievable cars for the year but I feel the interior is cheesy.

If I had a choice I would go with the GT-500 but Terminators are no mistake.

I actually went through the same thought process about 3 months ago...and you see my final decision.

Only reason I didn't go 03/04 cobra is because most of the ones I could find were either highly modded (and molested) or high mileage.

Picked up the 08 Shelby (bone stock w/ 9k miles) and haven't second guessed it at all.

Another vote for the '08 GT500, for many obvious reasons, but especially if "head turning appeal" is a factor...

My '03 was a coveted 10th Anniversary edition, but it didn't get one-tenth of the attention that my GT500 gets!

Head-turning scale: GT500 > '03/'04 Cobra > '11 GT

partial to the 03/04...and to phlobus...a ported eaton cobra has run 10s so yes a cobra with much smaller TS than a 2.8 or 3.4 will easily run 10s. Just take a look around the website youll see.

Love the look of the 03/04 Cobra's too.

Would like to have a 5.0 DD, but my truck works better for that.

How much is he looking to spend? The Cobras will run him low 20s, but the gt500's and the 11' GTs are going to be mid to high 30's.

He could easily get a cobra and mod it up to 700hp and still not have come close to the price he paid for the shelby or the GT.

But if he wants something newer get the gt500 and have just as badass as a ride, but for alot more. I think he will be happy with whatever decision he makes.

if you have the coin go with a 2011, the 2003/2004 cobra now is more about performance per dollar value than just which is better~

If he's got the money to mod to GT500, then that would be my first choice, as it's gonna make tons of power and turn way more heads than an 03/04 Cobra. If buying the GT500 is gonna max his budget, I'd go toward a low-mile twin-screw 03/04 and have a badass ride from day 1.
