Windshield replacement - best option

Had a rock hit my window from a car coming towards me! Loud hit but I couldn't find any damage and then noticed a hole where my registration sticker was and of course it is spreading.

What's the best service option for replacing the windshield? Ford dealerships ?

I'm afraid of using any service where they come to your house. It is usually one installer who uses a suction cup to hold the weight of the temporary windshield and rotate it into position. I have slight body damage on the door sheet metal of my Escape from this process and I see the same issue on coworkers cars who had windshields replaced. The sheet metal on the doors is too thin and cannot support that much weight.

The dealership probably does not have a "windshield replacement" guy on staff. They usually call the same company that comes to your house for the repair.
I would call someone who has good reviews and have it done wherever it is convenient.

Make sure you tell whoever you want Ford OEM replacement parts..
This ^^^

The Ford dealer will farm it out to a windshield company. They will not do it "in house"

Look for a local well regarded shop that send 2 people to avoid the "arm". We have one, where we are, and actually many of the dealerships use this company, vs the mega national chains.

I would wonder if Ford dealerships or aftermarket installers can even GET an OEM windshield. The supply chain is dinged and some parts are on backorder for months. Did you check to see for sure if you can get an OEM replacement?

I just started looking at dealerships to see how much they are....fairly cheap at $225 and in stock at some dealers - for local pickup only. The moulding itself is more than the windshield. It seems that all the Mustangs...Boss etc use the same windshield with the Mustang and hashing in the upper center.

Send me a PM and tell me what you think of the GV70...sister was looking at RAV4s but I wasn't impressed with reviews about it and fully loaded there are a lot of other choices out there.

Dealers may call in local glass guys or do it themselves. It’s all the same windshield for every trim level until lane departure and adaptive cruise come into play. One of my best friends has one of the northwest’s best glass shops and I have learned a ton from him over the years. I avoid safelite like the plague even if I break something out of the area. The supply issues are a huge deal out here and the new costs will be much higher with every new shipment from overseas as it’s almost all made in China, even Ford oem. Pick a shop that uses a good urethane, follows the correct prep and will guarantee against leaks. Look at their google reviews and see how they handle bad reviews.

The dealerships I called all said they farm the windshields out to Safelite...not my choice.. I have Grundy insurance so I think I can have anyone do it and request only an OEM part. I'm definitely not having anyone in my local area do it so I'll have a find a place within a few hours of driving time.

My grundy policy has $0 deductible on glass claims. I was happy for that in case the day ever comes

Be 100% assured it'll be replaced with an OEM windshield before you proceed.
Your windshield not only plays a structurally important part in your vehicles passenger safety, its also been engineered to provide sound deadening qualities in the cabin.

I spoke to Grundy. I can have them arrange for the replacement or I can take it to a shop I prefer on my own. They will pay the invoice / receipt but the process takes longer to get reimbursed. They use Safelite for windshield replacements.

no matter who your insurance company is, you have the right to choose any glass repair facility to perform work on your car.. Safelite will absolutely try to steer you to one of their shops, which is illegal. What you want to find is a store front glass company who accepts your insurance and can get the OE parts. as a glass company owner, I can tell you some insurance companies simply won't pay enough to do the job. i'm dealing with a 2021 Bronco Sport right now and Farm Bureau wants to pay me $120 less than what the part costs me (OE is only available).. so don't believe everything you hear from the insurance company or their TPA

I'm almost tempted to buy the windshield and molding myself to make sure it is Ford replacement parts ($530 total) and then pay a shop to install it but that's risky..not sure any shop would do it.

Find a reputable shop to order the glass for you. You'll have a chance to inspect it and see the paperwork before its installed.

As others mentioned, don't be afraid of the small mobile shops. I found a place here in FL with great reviews and have used them at least 5 times in as many years. I say used "them," but its really one guy, the owner, doing the installs. His wife coordinates things with the insurance companies and schedules the appointments.

Thanks,,,that's what I am going to do since I found a couple of small shops (father / son teams) with excellent ratings. Temp dropped so much and snow coming I am not sure I should get it done right now.

I was just talking about windshield repairs to a good friend and he was telling me how great Safelite is in Rocky Hill, CT. I have two small windshield chips from a stone that I may get filled in there. He swears by Safelite.
