I recently picked up a Cobra crank for free from a friend who's a Ford dealer tech. Years ago he pulled a 4v Cobra motor apart for a spun bearing and just left the crank sitting in an uncovered plastic bin, so it got really rusty and shitty looking. We have a pretty great crank shop in town, so I went and grabbed it and dropped it off for some work. Check out the before and after.

Standard work done on any crank there is magnaflux it to ensure it's not cracked, check for straightness, and this one was also shotpeened to get all the rust off. They welded and heat treated the journal with the spun bearing and cut the crank .010/010" so good to go now for $224. FWIW, they did the exact same repair on my crank 15 years ago and it's still going strong at well above 4 digit power. There is tons of cobra cranks out there that have damage that is easily repairable so don't be afraid of getting one if you can get for the right price. Right price for me is $100 or less.

Nice!

I wish I had a shop or shops around me with some actual talent. As it stands right now I can't even find a shop with a torque plate for a 4.6. I've even gone to a few that didn't know ford made aluminum 4.6s!

I have a kellog crank that the rear thrust surface has some grooves in it. I'm still holding onto it for this same reason. I was quoted $800-$1000 to repair it without it even being looked at. Once they become really hard to find, I will dig it out and have it repaired.

Send it to Crankshaft Supply. They have stuff shipped to them from all over the country. That Eagle crank above with the thrust damage I had fixed was $238 if I remember.
