Yes they were, but they were involved with the landing at Normandy. The Army was nowhere near as versed on amphibious landings as the Marines are, hence why the Marines helped advise and were considered to be deployed during the landing. The Marine Corps was small then but they still could have deployed a contingency of Marines during that fight.
