Hey guys,

So today is my last day as a field surveyor at a local cable company. I had been with the company for three years. Two of those years I was a fleet mechanic, but they laid off the entire dept due to outsourcing. I found this field surveyor position in the company so I could reach the three year mark and be vested in my 401k. Now my new job is going to be a stationary engineer apprentice at a hospital doing hvac and boiler maintenance. Its a career change and im taking a pay cut but from what I know about this union I think its a step in the right direction. Not really a huge union guy but within the past 4 years I have been laid off 3 times from various positions and hope since this union is more diverse it will provide me with better opportunities to support my family. the apprenticeship is 3 years and its going to be a struggle but I think its a better career choice than automotive. The pay never seems to be there. Wish me luck, little nervous about the jump since I have a wife, 2 kids and mortgage to support. I just want to provide a better life for my family and not feel so beat down by the man no matter how hard I try to succeed.

Good luck. Hope it works out & you didn't have to take a huge pay cut. :)
$4/hr going from $24hr to $20hr. its like $9000 less a year, but its guaranteed 5% raise every 6 months for the 3 year apprenticeship so in the long run it will turn around im hoping. just anxious

I think it is actually a very good trade. At +5% every 6 months (!!!) you will be >$24/hour after 2 yrs. At the end of your apprenticeship you will be at $26.80. I suspect the job stability and potential for raise thereafter is better than current. Enjoy the new gig.

I think becoming a licensed HVAC tech is a great profession. I was just reviewing the expenses on rental property and thought damn, I spend too much much money each year on furnace inspections. Good luck to you!

There is something to be said for a solid employer that isn't about to relocate. Another bonus is that they can't ship the building to China to have it serviced.
Short term loss for long term stability, sounds like a win to me.

First off, good luck in the new field. Second, I don't know how the model is at that hospital however I would suggest making some strategic inquiries about sterilizer and washers. Some places facilities takes care of them, some use Biomed.

Learn those and you can make some damn good money.
