UC Berkeley removed 20,000 videos they had made available to the public for free over a complaint that there was no closed captioning so the hearing impaired couldn't watch them. Instead of shelling out a fortune to add CC to the videos, they are removing public access so only berkeley students and staff can view them.

I'm actually surprised Berkeley wasn't supportive for the disabled's abilities to use their videos.

this happened over 3 weeks ago didn't it?

The deaf couldn't learn, so now no one can; makes sense.

No, people made a complaint to the federal government, and the government agreed that all videos needed to be accessible to all people, including the hearing impaired. So their choices were to either spend a fortune adding CC, or remove them all from public access (free).

If they were smart they would upload them all to youtube and rake in the ad revenue.

Ya it was. Basically that was the federal governments view.

When I was a kid my neighbor was deaf but he was also a trouble maker. When he'd come over in my yard even though he wasn't invited, we'd place a hand over our mouth so he could not read our lips. He got the message loud and clear.

Do we, as a nation, need to cater towards every disability out there? What about people with E.D. who want to watch porn? Will the government force porn companies to include boner pills with each movie? You see it normally during a state or city press conference where the person stands front and center doing sign language but it is one hell of a distraction.

no joke, they have porn videos for the blind. They're called "descriptive porn" and from my understanding, it's the regular video with audio intact, with a "sexy woman's voice" describing exactly what's going on.

Excuse me while I conduct further research...

I guess Berkeley is only supportive until it costs them money.
Common trend in that part of the state, too bad it can't be turned into Berkeley harbor.

As someone with profound hearing loss, I can understand the frustration of not having CC available. However, I wouldn't complain myself because more likely whatever it is I want to know/learn, there is a CC option available somewhere or written material to read.
