its only a sales pitch to get you back onto the lot, and they know if you come it means you read the letter and even somewhat considered the possibility, and they know if they can expand on that, they have a possible sale. Plus they will offer you shit for your trade (like usual) and turn around and sell it to someone else and make profit off it again.

Realistically they took one sale, and turned it into 3 (original sale, plus new car sale and when they sell the traded in original car)

That's how dealerships make money. I sold Fords for about a year (100 cars or so). This is back when you could actually make some money. Besides the dealer marked up cars...I use to make most of my money on used vehicles.

This is a great sales approach...the person that trades in the car usually gets a real low trade in value. If you trade in your old car for a new one, the dealer gets rid of one new car that's been sitting on his lot for a while. The salesman than turns around and sells the used car for a huge profit. It's a win, win for them.

There's usually more money/profit in selling used cars, especially now with new cars selling at sticker or well below. Let's face it, in this economy there isn't much profit in new cars and dealer's inventories are bloated. They want to do anything to reduce their inventory and also make a decent profit.

Since, everybody is tightening their belts so to speak, some past new car buyers are opting for used instead. That's even more of a reason for them to get your used vehicle on their lot.

To the OP...I don't think this dealer wants your Cobra or Mustang in particular, they just want to generate some sales, move inventory and make a profit.

When times are slow dealerships will look to their files and do cold calling to customers that purchased cars 4-6 years ago. That is all it is. It generally nets 1 sale in a 100.

I've gotten notices like this often through the years. As other have said, it's a business and if they can buy your vehicle at a good price, why not. And if you've suddenly found yourself in a bind and need money, maybe it would help you out. And, as others have also noted, it's also a way to get you to come into the dealership and maybe, instead of them buying your used vehicle, get you to trade on a new one. It's not a big deal, it's just about generating business.

I wouldnt care what they "needed" no good deal equals you dont get my car... and no dealership will give you a good deal on your trade... unless they up the profit on the car you are trading for... its a lose/lose situation.

I work at a dealership, and this is all just a sales pitch. They have a data base of every car sold, and every few years it will pull ur name up in the system. It will show u have owned this vehicle for X amt of years and according to statistics should be looking at trading in soon. So they have their sales team call u and feed u a line of bullshit for u to come in and look at a new vehicle, and hopefully buy. They really dont care about ur car. They just want to sell u something. And most people fall for it.
