I live on the island of Sicily. I am currently in the country of Malta for spring break, a 35 minute - 90 km flight. Why the ***k can't I see your house?? I hate you.
You don't even know me. Why would you hate me?

This is fun.

Trolling is one thing. You are good.

I work with orbital mechanics and have seen some seriously cerebrally malfunctioning people. The level of woeful and willful ignorance makes me suggest self ingesting something roughly 9mm in size to those people.

Jeez. That's pretty harsh.

Here's a serious question. Can you map or predict the rotation and orbit of the earth going back to the days when the continents were all one big giant piece of land? I ask because it seems like having all the land mass on one side might throw the rotation out of wack, kinda like throwing a weight off a wheel.

So how would tectonic shift affect our orbit?

No. I'm serious about some of these questions. It goes to show how crazy people can get when you don't follow what everyone believes to be true. It's ok to be skeptical and question the narrative. I didn't get one person try to look at the numbers and actually talk about it. Just one guy said that light bends over a mile, which to me is far fetched. This other guy wanted me to shoot myself.

Who gives a hoot if it's round or flat? I just had some observations that didn't add up.

Which is more likely, that there is a massive, decades (if not centuries) long hoax being perpetrated for no obvious reason, or that your interpretation of a couple of observations is wrong? I suppose another possibility is that you don't believe anything you posted and are just trolling. It's something to do I guess.

@James_Snover we need a quantum physics expert.

@CV355 can you give me a white board drawing explaining light refraction in the atmosphere.

Who knows? I believe some things about the possibility the earth is flat and some things are very hard to ignore that it may be a sphere. I think the two scenarios I laid out were fairly simple and anyone can look at the numbers and possibly come to the same conclusion as me. Maybe not.

Why do you need a quantum physics expert to look at some simple math?

Refraction is a thing, for sure! Over one mile of bent light and no further distortion? I'm game to learn about it.

Wow, things have gotten pretty crazy here since I last looked in. All that mountain stuff.....

People surely recognize that everyone has different eyesight. Maybe the capn has really good vision like I do. I can tell you that if you are in my group you will absolutely NEVER lose a golf ball. My eyes are that good. A hawk has nothing on me.

So, that means we also can see mountains really far away as well. I think most would agree that pretty much proves the capn's point. All that stuff about being way up in an airplane is just confusing the issue. The higher you are the more different things appear.

Solid victory.

Through the curved windows in the plane? Hmmm.

How do you explain the horizon rising up to meet your eye? Why doesn't the horizon in front drop off, too?
So what about other planets? Why would other planets be round and the earth be flat?

Alright, I'll give it one more shot. I'm not a scientist but I do try to pay attention to things.

The tectonic shift isn't going to do shit to our orbit. The weight of the land mass above sea level isn't really significant compared to the rest of the weight of the planet. Especially considering the empty voids would be filled up with water. If you took the entire earths crust, and not just the part that's above the water, it would weigh about 1% of what the entire planet weighs. We have a rather large, even heavier buddy about 240k miles away (moon) that would have a better chance at doing that, and it hasn't. Also, our planet already does "wobble" which gives us seasons.

We can talk about the numbers if you want, in relation to the mountains you can see from where you live, but the problem is the surrounding area. If the elevation drops over the next 25 miles, you're going to be able to see much further as you effective are looking from a higher location to a lower one. The only real way to test that (as I mentioned before) is to look at something that doesn't have an elevation change.

I guess a good question to ask would be, why can you see France from the tops of the cliffs of dover, but you can't from the shore? That really should be the end of discussion question.

Light can refract well over a mile, different temperatures and pressures do some funky things with the way it moves through different mediums, I mean, stars twinkling is a form of light refraction. Also, a mirage for example, can literally look like a reflection in the sand, because the temperature of the sand is causing the light to bend upwards. I found a picture:

Mirage.jpg

Light bending a few hundred feet over many miles wouldn't be out of the question.

Wow.

Have you ever seen a rainbow? If you have, you likely saw light refraction from more than a mile, that stretched more than a mile (depending on the rainbow).

Maybe we are talking about two different things. Of course if you're in an airplane you can also observe a circular rainbow. I'm talking about light refracting land mass in front of me. You're saying that in my field of vision is basically a mirage and that the actual mountain I'm looking at is 5000+ feet below the horizon is somehow being bent back up to my eye level.
