Before anybody freaks out, this isn't the 1st oil change ever on the car lol. I just purchased it in November and put a couple thousand miles on it and it's about time to change the oil. I've always done my own oil changes on anything from a S-10, to a F150, GTO, Focus and several Mustangs but there seems to always be little "tricks" that you learn along the way.

Anything special I should know about this car? I just do it by pulling it up on race ramps in my garage. Got 6 quarts of RP 5w20 HPS and a Motorcraft filter just waiting.....

7 quarts FTW NOT 6. Also I take the filter out set it on the bench take the oil filter box break it down and wedge it under the filter on the car. That way the old oil doesn't get on the rack.

Aluminum foil when you remove the oil filter so it doesn't get all over the steering rack helps

I bought a PIG Form a Funnel for my old 5.4 3v FX4 to help keep everything clean. It also works great on a Cobra to help keep everything dry. I think it was $20+ at the autoparts store, but its paid for itself by now.

Good tips above - Lots of guys put a plastic bag around the filter to catch oil drips. I try to let my car sit all night and change the oil the next day - it cuts down on the oil behind the filter.

I've never seen that. I'll have to get one of those.

7 quarts here as well. I actually asked the previous owner how many quarts he used. He also said 7, so I was quite pleased. I use the tinfoil method, but I need to look for that thing cj found.

3 years! It's not that hard to do lol. I spend 84 dollars once a year on Amsoil ss 10w30. I likely have 700 miles on this stuff, seems like a waste but it helps me sleep better at night.

I don't think the $8 a quart royal purple went bad. No residue on the oil cap, so all good in my world.

As soon as the oil starts coming out the drain capture a sample, six ounces is enough. Let the oil drain for a couple of seconds before you grab the sample. Then go to Blackstone Labs for a free test kit. Send them the sample for analysis. You do have to pay for the analysis.

This will give you a base line for bearing wear, contaminants like coolant, water, hydraulic fluids,(for those auto conversion guys).
Then every year (more often if you want) you will be able to tell if the next test is showing you any abnormal wear particles in the oil.
