Next-Gen Ford Raptor Mule Spied Testing

Now that the new 2015 Ford F-150 is ready to be released, the American automaker has turned its attention on its Raptor performance truck.

Spy photographers have caught a Ford Raptor mule testing next-generation parts, sporting a new grille and hood along with the aluminum crew cab body from the 2015 Ford F-150. Other current Raptor parts have also found their way onto the mule, but noticeably missing are the signature blue shocks in the rear wheel wells which suggests that Ford could be testing new components for the next-generation Raptor.

The new Raptor is expected to be either a 2016 or 2017 model year pickup and the spy photographers noted that when the mule accelerated, it sounded more like an EcoBoost V6 under the hood than a V8.

interesting. don't know how i feel about that.

While I love the F150 EB's, I dunno how I feel about this sort of specialty vehicle being v6 powered instead of a roaring V8.

Though if it makes similar power, I could see it doing just as well.

I would be ok with a high output ecoboost v6. The truck's biggest downfall is how much it weighs. So similar, if not better power and torque, lighter engine in addition to the lighter body/frame, and better mpg (theoretically)? Sign me up.

Whatever it is powered with will do great. Ford won't screw up the raptor.

I have to agree with this!

I'll tell you how I feel about that...

Crap Ford, why don't you just make it a 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle Plug-in Hybrid? That way it will attract praise from all of the tree huggers and enviro-nazis and there will be absolutely no chance of anyone confusing it with an American truck. It can sound like a sewing machine to excite all of those male seamstresses on their way to the Prius Club of America outings.

I'm not opposed to Ecoboost technology and I'm impressed with the performance of the 3.5 EB and the new 2.7 EB for daily drivers and Mulch haulers, but the top dog performance American truck should have an American V8.

Period.

I don't know. I think adding turbos and intercoolers to a purpose-built off road truck that is meant to be punished is going to create too many possible areas of failure.

Keep it simple with a V8, maybe supercharged.

I'd guess most trophy trucks and Baja 500 trucks run NA engines for simplicity and ease of repair.

I would agree with that, but Ford has used both the 3.5 and 2.7 ecoboost engines in the Baja 1000. Supposedly with no issues for either of them.

Can't wait to see the updated power numbers. I wouldn't take that article to mean that the ecoboost is going to be the next raptor motor, it could be a 5.0 still. I'm ok with a '17 model year introduction though. I'm not ready to buy a new one yet.

Anyone who brags about the Ecoboost being better than the 6.2 because the torque comes on at lower RPM has never driven an Ecoboost Ford. Sure, the dyno charts show peak torque at a lower RPM, and if given the luxury of a standing start and some power braking, you feel it, but in practical driving, when stepping on it coming out of a low speed corner, the turbo lag combined with the sluggish downshifts means the 6.2 is actually applying more torque sooner than the EcoBoost.

And anyone bragging about the Ecoboost's potential when modified has somehow become blind to the V8's potential. The extremely conservative (and warranteed) Roush supercharger packages for the 5.0 and 6.2 V8's produce 570 hp and 590 hp respectively (with 530/590 tq). How many 3.5 Ecoboost V6's are running those kinds of numbers on 93 octane pump gas? Anyone?

It's too bad Ford never tried to get better numbers out of the 6.2. Besides big changes like direct injection, they never even put electronic power assist steering on it which would have improved mileage and power. I fear with the 6.2 gone, Ford will do the same with the 5.0: stop all continuous improvement until they can claim Ecoboost is clearly superior and then kill it off.

My concern for EB only Raptors in the future played a part in my recent purchase of a 14 as opposed to waiting on a 15+.

Cutting all V8s from the Raptor lineup in the upcoming model years, I think, would be a drastic change that may shock the targeted audience for the vehicle. If an EB motor is in fact slated to go into the next Raptor, I believe Ford will also offer a V8 option as well, at least for the first run or two. That way they have time to gauge the interest generated by the market, improve EB performance for this type of vehicle and ween people off the V8.

I'm excited to see what they have in store for the truck but unless a S/C 5.8 (or something similar) finds its way under the hood, I'm perfectly content with my 6.2.

Raptor owners are not concerned about gas mileage. Ford didn't expect to sell as many as they did with gas prices where they are. After that, I think they should just get the 6.2L to 500hp and with the new aluminum frame it should shed some weight so that would be nice.

More travel would be awesome, but doub't they'll do that though as the mass doesn't use it for what it is intended for..
