mustang ducktail spoiler 94-98; 99-04

I've been working on a ducktail spoiler for my car because I felt that it needed a slick back spoiler instead of the s351 spoiler that I had before. Plus my car now has wider fenders in the back, so the old spoiler looked small. I was planning to post this on the fabforums carbon site, but I figured that I post the progress here as well.

Here's the car that I building it for. (this pic was it without its: front end [hood and fenders are one piece--a stand in hood was used when it was shipped to the shop], it's roush body kit, and widebody quarter panels).

The final will be made out of carbon mainly because of its strength, and also because of its I have a lot of carbon in stock and it is the main material that I use in composites.

Right now, I just finished the plug. I'm going to be making a two part mold, and then make my carbon part by end of next week.

Here is my progress so far.

I first made a carbon copy of a wing and then cut it into pieces and started setting it to follow the mustang lines.

and that thing in the background is my rear diffuser.

I wanted a larger wing and not just a ducktail portion, so I took another wing I had in stock and harvested its posts and bottom section. I then meshed them together and started making a spoiler. I plan on having the key hole available and a rear light (led) on the wing, so I'm playing with how I want them.

I drive really fast so I needed something that would actually produce downforce, but also not be at such an angle that it would create too much drag. So the spoiler is at a 45 degree angle which is near the sweet spot of 50 degrees which gives a good mix of downforce and drag, and which is the degree that is run in nascar cup series.

I worked on the final blending and shaping and today have started sealing the plug so that I can start making my mold.

So I'll update this thoughtout the next steps as make my carbon wing, which will be painted black along with the rest of the car.

The diffuser works by creating a Venturi effect. At high speeds it creates a low pressure area and produces downforce. Here's a link to when I made the part.

The baddest custom motorsports fabrication on the planet

I designed it to work with my roush body kit, so it hangs lower than the oem bumper, but is higher when the roush rear valances are attached.

I also plan on running my exhaust out through the windows which will now be functional since I switched back to a supercharger, so I ditched the 4" downpipe that I had before.

So the finished product will have quad pipes. Plus it gets rid of that cow catcher plastic portion of the bumper.

Why did you go back to a blower from the turbo setup you had?

Are you running mile events with the car?

I definitely plan on playing around with the standing mile events. Particularly the mojave mile.

Seriously, those rear brakes are freaking huge.

Big brakes for the win. That's all I can look at.

I'm distracted by your big brake porn.

Thanks guys. I'm a huge fan of big brakes. The black car has 8 piston brembos in the front with 15" (380mm/34mm rotors), 14.7" rears with brembo rear calipers and parking brakes.

The red car has 14.6" 370mm/34 rotors and 14" rear brakes with gt500 calipers in the rear. I love big brakes, and the stopping power is insane.

Looks really good man. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Looks really good, impressive

Thanks a lot. It took me long time to get to the place to actually be busting out quality composite parts.

Well I had a huge turbo. One the size of a basketball thank to my bud Mihovetz, but it was causing me tons of associated problems. Mainly the task of running huge things like a 4" downpipe and up pipes throughout the entire car that cost me tons of fabrication time and hassle. My motor is being rebuilt by Accufab and I was sitting in the engine room when they were building their 1600hp cobra jet motor Accufab Cobra Jet Engine Makes 1600 Horsepower On Westech Dyno - YouTube ,

I also thought about our supercharged drag truck.

it has a supercharger on it, runs 8 second quarter miles and never has an issue.

Both of these motors make more hp than my 1000 hp turbo setup, so I thought it was time fo a change. I realized that I could run the same power on a blower.

So I talked it over with the team, and they told me to go to a big centrifugal, so I swapped over. It would give me less hassle, reliability and a smog eo number, and I my motor with a novi 2000 would still make the same goals that I wanted.

I was expecting something made out of metal much like the Griggs spoiler. This looks really cool though. Looking forward to seeing it finished. I wouldn't mind learning how to work with composites. Do you have any good links besides that forum or any good book recommendations?
