Shaun provided me with the same input when assessing my datalog running the base tune. I Had been using BP 93 gas. He also said it wouldn't hurt my engine running his tune with non Shell or Chevron, that it would pull timing and I'd be losing some power. Boosted guys could be more dangerous?
Procal sucks btw. It doesn't change much and it ping like a mofo...
Thanks for the input on the procal. I'll likely just keep trying to find a good source for fuel so I can get my AED tune, and just hope for the best after that. In the meantime, I'll just install my JPC OAPs so I can pretend it's faster and don't risk blowing it up.

I usually buy my gas from gas stations close to the interstate ,in my theory they would have a higher turn around rate on gas going through their tanks. I only buy shell vpower and i get it from Shell stations ,not conveinience stores. I'M about to install a blower in a couple months and seeing these guys blow their motors lately makes me think twice.

I heard the same thing from Shaun last month.. bad gas seems to be pretty common anywhere you are. I've thought about logging and trying out different stations. Luckily I just moved to an area with a ton of traffic and lots of euro cars rolling around eating hi test so i think the 93 is nice and fresh all the time. Still worried about getting a bad fill up ugh

Yep. I was on the dyno about a month ago and was only getting 21.5 degrees spark advance because of bad gas. I then switched to shell and it went upto 22.5 degrees. Just a bunch of bad fuel going around. Shortly after the dyno session, my passenger side O2 senser failed from shit fuel.

When I was n/a and wanted an AED tune I sent logs of my previously tuned 5.0. He replied with do not go wot until you do a compression test. This scared the f*k out of me and I did a compression test that night. All was good to go and I sent him my findings. I paid him and had a base tune in no time. Great tuner and worth the time to find a gas station that has good 93.

I also was told by Shaun that the quality of gas was bad. I went and got some race gas and he tuned the car. Now when I go to the drag strip, I make sure I have a little less than an 1/4 tank of gas and buy 1 1 /2 gallons of 100 octane and mix with what is in the tank. I am going to buy a five gallon can of torco from the race shop near me and mix a gallon in with every fill up just for Safety's sake.

I find it hard to believe you are getting tank after tank after tank of bad gas............
The issue is that these cars pull timing depending on the quality of gas or the octane amount in there. And what Shaun is saying is that in order to get the best performance out of the car the higher the octane the better. Being an auto I don't really reach the rpms that most manuals get to on the street unless i'm wot, and IMO that this is when the number 8 cylinder is at it most vulnerable to detonation.

I find it hard to believe you keep getting bad gas. Sounds like another issue

That's what I was going to say. I get 93 from Hess and have no problems (or Mobile). Maybe you can get a 91 tune and just use 93. Keep in mind that any "decent" tune will really wake your car up. You dont necessarily have to eek out every last pony (HP) from the tune. You"can" have a great-performing tune AND a safe tune.

Not trying to be a smartass but...how do you know you have no problems? Are you data logging WOT pulls? A "safe and great performing tune" is exactly what I was after so I contacted AED. I did so because of the reputation they have here. All that having been said...it does seem odd that I get shitty fuel twice in a row from two different sources. I spoke with Shaun on the phone earlier today. I'm going to try yet another source and do a KAM reset on my XCAL to erase previous memory. Then I'll relog and see what happens. If that comes back bad, then maybe there is something wrong with my car. Not sure after that.

I know because I have had several dyno pulls and a few data logs driving with Gus at Steeda after doing subsequent mods. Just had 2 WOT dyno runs last week after LT's, and Today Gus drove it with data logging to check my fuel usage (since I told him my MPG should be a little better). So I myself have had a couple of each since the install of my tune.

Also, My tune was a dyno custom 3- hour tune...not a mail order tune, so it's all good.

RC,

I still don't get what point you're trying to make. It's very possible to get bad gas on consecutive fills when its so abundant as of late.

Im not the one who said, I was agreeing that I did not think (and that's my opinion) that you're likely to get consecutive 93 tanks of gas that is bad enough to make a tune run badly.

Exactly.

It's not about the gas at a station being stale, that's just not possible station after station. We operate 11 BP stations, supply fuel to approximately 25 others. I would say on average each station receives at least one load of premium fuel per week. With that being said some stations receive two loads of regular octane fuel in one day. The gas does not go stale in a weeks time. I am going to have Sean do a tune for me here shortly, I will have him take a look at my timing logs with me using 93 octane BP premium as it's pulled from the terminal.

Me personally wouldn't touch anything with the name BP on it, horrible company and trust me there hiring process is a little shady to say the least.

Dude your gonna mix in 1 gallon of Torco in on every fill up? LOL you know you can only can achieve roughly an 107 octane and that's with 1/2 a gallon per 10 gallons of 93, anything over that your just wasting it. So instead of getting 5 tanks you can squeeze 10 tanks if you plan on going all out 100% of the time on the street/track.

I recently had my car dyno tuned, and was told i had bad gas as well. My tuner said the knock sensors were only allowing 20* of timing instead of 27*. He dumped in some octane booster and it instantly picked up. He said that right now, WaWa and Shell have the worst gas possible, stick to BP and sunoco.

I must be lucky, Shaun has read several datalogs from me. I'm always told the car has great fuel. I use Shell and Sunoco 93. Southeast Fl.

testing fuel octane - Yellow Bullet Forums

^Good read above: This thread made me look up to see if there was a easy way to check octane rating like you can with e85 but you can't very easily or cheap.

I had noticed as well all the car that have been blowing up have been on the east coast. May or may not be the issue but it is a odd coincedience.
