@helloWorld, 2600k @ 4.8, water cooled I assume? should defiantly upgrade your cpu wih that 1080 TI, 6700k/7700k and 8gb of ram are your bottlenecks.

Yeah, my CPU is watercooled. When I end up building my new system, I am definitely going to get a waterblock for this GPU as well, it NEEDS one. Luckily, EK makes one.

I do agree with you about my bottleneck. With Threadripper coming up and Coffee Lake coming up (but the real chipset is supposed to come out in January...), I am not sure what I want to do.

Is anyone considering switching from Intel to AMD with the new Ryzen platform? I have been putting together my wishlist based on an i5 7600K but it looks like a lot of the reviews for the Ryzen 5 1600X are looking really good. A lot of the popular reviewers (even some that have been accused of being blue team shills) are switching over. I understand that they are content creators and thus need the extra cores. But even as only a gaming and internet browsing rig, they are recommending the R5 very highly.

From what I've seen in terms of gaming, which is the whole reason I'm even into PCs, Intel and Nvidia are still the go-to manufacturers. However, performance to dollar ratio seems to swing more in AMD's favor with Ryzen and the RX cards.

So, if you're mostly gaming on your PC, which is more important to you? Overall ability but at a higher price, or performance:dollar?

I went performance:dollar on my first (current) rig and it's had gremlins from day one. I want my next build to run smoothly and I'm willing to pay the a little more for it.

When I bring up Newegg, the i5 7600K ($239) and Asus ROG Maximus IX Hero ($223) combo is actually cheaper than the Ryzen 5 1600X ($234) and Asus ROG Crosshair VI Hero ($234) pairing.

I'm not sure what your resolution/monitor setup is, but if you're mostly gaming and on at least a 1080 monitor I would recommend something like an i5-7400/i5-7600K and a GTX 1070.

For 1080/1440 144Hz; i5-7600K and a GTX 1080 at the minimum. 1080 Ti if you can swing it.

What's the refresh rate?

I ask because I myself have an i7-7700K OC'd to 5.1GHz and a GTX 1070 (haven't bothered with GPU OC'ing). And even with that combo I struggle to achieve 144FPS in most AAA titles.

If you're fine with, for example, a 144Hz monitor and only 100-120FPS then sure. Not to mention a 1080 (non-Ti) is a better piece at current market rates (thanks miners).

Not sure on refresh rate. Still shopping around. It's going to be Black Friday before I make a move on anything. Hopefully the price effect from mining has dropped off by then.

I was going to go with a 7700K but was told that for gaming only, the 7600K was the sweet spot. Maybe I'll take that saved money and put it toward a 1080/1080Ti.

A 7600K is definitely the sweet spot whereas a 7700K is overkill and overly expensive for the minute gains, if any.

Come time to shop though, I'd see what kind of deals can be had on the last generation chips and motherboards and see if it's worth it to you to just go that route; i.e. i5-6600K/Z170 versus i5-6700K/Z270.

Because one thing with the Kaby Lake chips, especially if you plan on overclocking, is that they run hot. So also factor in a de-lid kit and accompanying materials or the price to have it done by a pro.

I'll definitely go with the Z270 platform. It's been 5 years since I built my rig. So it'll probably be another 5 after this. I want to future proof it as good as I can (within reason).

Good info Zhisel. I read the Kaby lake 7700's ran hot if overclocked. I won't do that, but my liquid cooling should help.

Anyone want to buy a brand new EVGA 1060 6GB FTW D+? -:D

Thanks man, and yeah, Kaby Lake chips very much do run hot. Mine runs cooler at 5.1GHz with the de-lid than it did at stock speed untouched. Lol

Well, I had the I7-7820X in the motherboard and booted up for only a few hours when I decided to stop by the local Micro Center. And of course they had the I9-7900X on sale for $899! This CPU was selling on Amazon for $1,149.00! Sometimes Amazon beats out Micro Center and sometimes not. My wife's 1070 was also $200 cheaper at Micro Center. So I decided to get the I9.

The 7820X was a tray order from PC Nation and they are charging a 15% restocking fee so I am going to hold on to the 7820X and build another mini tower for another room before the end of the year.

I have the I9 running at 4644.8 MHZ / 3200 MHZ RAM without issues. I had to flash the BIOS to an unofficial version released by Asus after their latest 0503 caused post problems for many running PC3200, forcing them to run the memory at lower speeds. But this latest BIOS seems to be working great!

Threadripper was also released the day after I got the I9. It will be interesting to see real world performance of these new AMD CPUs. A Micro Center sales guy told me it won't be long before the Threadripper also sells for about $899.

Built this system this past Christmas as a Flight Simulator (Lockheed Martin Prepar3D) specific system. Flight simulators are horribly coded (getting better) and cater better to faster quad cores (usually 5GHz+) instead of these multi core monsters. The computer has served me well, and runs the sim incredibly well at 4k (using DSR Tech on a 1080p monitor, works well)

Specs:

i7-6700k overclocked at 4.9 Ghz

EK Predator 240 All in One Water Cooling with Quick Disconnects

16GB G Skill DDR4-3200

180 GB Intel 330 SSD (OS) 500GB Western Digital HDD (Storage and other games) and a 256 GB Samsung 850 PRO SSD (Lockheed Martin Prepar3D)

Nvidia Titan X Pascal (overclocked +190 on the core, +830 memory)

Corsair 850W Power Supply

Fractal Design Define S Case

MSI Gaming M7 Z170 Motherboard
