What is the heavy block (w/two bolts) under the DIFF?

what is the heavy block of metal that has two bolts in it, located directly beneath the front of the differential. I had to take it off to do my bushings and I was just wondering what exactly it is used for on the car? Can it be removed to reduce weight??

its there to dampen vibration and tune the chassis. mercedes have weights hanging all over the chassis.

go ahead and remove it if it makes you feel better.

it feels like it weighs about 30-40lbs of solid iron to me...I was just wondering if it would hurt anything to remove it

It's a doorstop or a paper weight, depending on your needs.
