ok curious about gearing
i have a 97 stang and dropping in an 01 lightning engine.

anyways, i got 4:10s on it right now

my question is what gears do you all run in your trucks

i know many cobra owners like 4:10s and even 4:30s

should i up to4:30s or traction might be a problem so down to a 3:55 even, or stay the same

obviously my choices are
3:55
3:73
3:90
4:10
4:30
4:56

i was thinking to keep the 4:10s, but curious to get your guys opinion

I think the 4:10 will be to much gear for the Lightning motor, and the smaller tires a mustang comes with.

I would guess that 3:55's would prob be the best gear for your project. However not knowing the gear ratios in your trans, i would wait till you have it all together and see what rpms you run in each gears before you change the gears.

what rearend do you have? they put the F-250 rear end in the L's for a reason, and the 8.8 prolly wont last long. Go with 3:55's or 3:73's

if you are bolting a manual tranny to the L motor, you should go with the 3:90's, have you comp reflashed with the gears, and go from there. If you can't hit 100mph in 4th then it's wrong. Mustangs should not ever hit 5th at the 1/4 unless you're running 4:10's.

it's a fully built rear end...
eaton posi, moser 31 spline axles, c-clip eliminators, etc.

stock t-45 tranny for now

as for tires i am running on
weld pro stars 15X10 on Mickey Thompson Indy Profiles
i am lookinf though for a nice 15" Copper Cobra tire... i want some with a nice meaty tread for the street... none of this drag radial stuff. i'll keep the slicks and stuff specificlly for the track.

i would love an 03 6-speed tranny but all in due time.

my biggest concern is traction with this motor in my slightly lighter stang.
i'll post some pics of the project soon. especially of my custom inlet that bolts to the eaton blower... since the inlet/tb going over the blower makes the entire thing way to tall for my car... i had ti improvise a little.

but yeah back to the subject at hand...
so anything in the 4 range will be bad for the car... and should stick to a 3: geared ratio?
