^ Have you known someone addicted to Heroin?

You cannot compare the two. Trust me, I know.

Alcohol is addictive, but, nothing like a narcotic or drug, but, still, addictive nonetheless.

Anyone can be addicted to anything. I don't have an addictive personality so I don't get it at all but I know plenty of people that can't function daily without eating, drinking, or doing X. Whether it be drugs, alcohol, coffee, or even going to the gym to get a workout. Addicts are everywhere.

Simple..... one that cannot function normally when they drink.

I have to disagree. Being able to function normally while drunk is the corner stone of being an alcoholic.

I know plenty of functional alcoholics. They all have underlying issues with depression, social anxiety, stress and learned behaviors that results in their unconscious need to "have a drink".

This need is usually covered up with "I'm just trying to have a good time", "I'm just trying to relax" etc; and since it doesn't negatively impact their lives, no one cares or highlights the problem.

Being a functional addict can happen with anything. Cigarettes, Booze, Pot, coke, x and even Facebook and internet porn.

Just because everyone does it or you are able to still manage your life does not mean you are not addicted.

Didn't I read somewhere that alcohol is the only drug where the withdrawals can be fatal?

I knew my dad had a drinking problem when he stabbed me with a fork in chest for arguing with my brother at the dinner table.

well I know Im one. Been sober almost 10 years. should have been dead years ago. Its bad when the doctors tell you your going to die. I found it was even worse when I realized it to. I think it just varies by person and its not about how much you drink. for me it started out as fun but escalated quickly. after a couple years I had to drink as soon as I got out of bed to keep the detox away and then keep going all day . It became normal to me as sad as that sounds.
I agree anyone can become addicted to to alcohol and drugs. I know some people dont like to believe that but after time your body will become dependent on it. no question I did it to myself. I have a very addictive personality and have trouble " turing off " my brain. then I found a good way to do that.I also really like a routine and would start drinking at the same time almost every night that is until it became an all day affair.
BY the time anyone really had any idea what was going on I had my first detox seizure and my liver was in terrible shape and I was only 21. things just got worse from there. my point is if you think you have problem talk with someone and be honest with your self.

Narcotic withdrawals are worse in my truly honest opinion of experiencing this through my parents up until my 20's.

I've seen my mom on the brink of death going through heroin/cocaine withdrawals that pushed my dad into becoming a bad alcoholic. He would drink about 20-30 beers a day, EVERY day, and by 8-9AM, he was drunk and functioned throughout the day.

My mother attended rehab at least 10 times, for weeks/months at a time. He actually died for about a minute and a half during a withdrawal as her body couldn't handle it and the paramedics recuscitated her. The 2nd time around, she tried committing suicide and her heart stopped and was once again, brought back.

My father, after 40+ years of drinking, could stop cold turkey, and has before. Alcohol is addicting, but, NOT like a narcotic or drug. It's similar, but, varies by person, and the average person will succumb to a drug like heroin or cocaine faster thank drinking a few beers or hard liquor.

True.. I used to do coke all the time and have been clean for a good long while. Still hang with people that do it and I literally turn my nose up to it.
I never got hooked and was extremely lucky. My friends not so lucky.

"Alcoholism is when you start letting drinking impact your life in a negative way." IMO.
^This.

My Grandfather and 3/6 Dad's siblings were alcoholics. I was with 2 of them during their drunken stupors. Absolutely disgusting. I’ll never forget it.

thanks. Its strange how things turn out in life. I used to get up every morning hoping that I could keep my hand from shaking to much so I could pour a glass of vodka or hold a beer. Now I wake up have some coffee and spend much of my day prosecuting DWI cases.

What about someone that drinks a few shots of Everclear every night in a row to get drunk until the bottle is gone after a week or so, but then they can go a couple weeks without alcohol with no withdrawals, cravings, etc

While someone may question their choice of drink, that's not alcoholism assuming it's not a "need" for them and it isn't impacting their life at all.

I feel that anti-drinking groups have made the level of drinking to be considered an alcoholic rather low. I have seen some studies that make any consumption a "Cause for Worry".

If you feel like your drinking is a problem, it is a problem. If you feel like you should quit, you probably should. If your friends and family are alarmed at your drinking, you should quit. All of this is easier said than done if you are an alcoholic.

Sorry, you posted right before me, lol.

I was directing that toward tecwizard since it seemed he was comparing heroin to alcohol.
I guess I was comparing the two. I know they are different addictions, what I guess I was trying to say is, they are both very powerful addictions.
