LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "The Munsters" are coming to the big screen courtesy of the Wayans brothers.

Keenen Ivory, Marlon and Shawn Wayans have struck a deal with Universal Pictures to take the 1960s television show about a family of friendly monsters who never quite get why people react in terror to them and give it a 21st century makeover.

The deal calls for the three Wayanses to write the screenplay as well as produce along with Rick Alvarez. There is a possibility that Keenen Ivory Wayans would direct, though no deal is in the works without a finished script.

"The Munsters" aired on CBS from 1964-66. The Wayans version will stay true to the original characters, but will place them in a contemporary setting.

Sources said the Wayans came up with the idea for a "Munsters" redo while in Canada filming their recently released collaboration "White Chicks." Coincidentally, Universal also had been tossing around ideas for an update on the property, so the brothers polished their take and took it to the studio.

Although specific dollar figures were not disclosed, sources described it as a very lucrative deal for the Wayanses. The deal marks the first time the brothers have taken on a screen adaptation, since their previous efforts have based on original ideas. Shawn and Marlon teamed to write "Scary Movie," "Scary Movie 2" and "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood." They teamed with Keenen Ivory to pen "Chicks."
