Well the true trac went on today. I found out a couple of things too. One, the pinion bearing was real worn, to the point that it would take some force to get it to spin. Power loss anyone? Next, the guy who removed my old posi said it was so hot that he had to put on leather gloves to remove it. All races and bearings were discolored and over heated. We belive a pinion seal may have gone out with the previous owner and ford tightened the bearing down way to hard. Anyhow, the truck has all new carrier bearings, pinion bearings, pinoin seal, and axle seals to go with the true trac and TA performance girdle. I can't beat on it yet but just driving it normal I can feel the tires try to break loose on slow speed turns. I can't wait to be smokin the tires ( both of them ) again!

Stan, how far are you from Billy? He did my install and charged me a silly, low price compared to what other shops would have charged.

Thats because he kept the Tru Trac and just installed a new factory setup...

He wins everytime!

I paid 175 for the install labor and fluid. However I also paid an additional 175 for the carrier bearings, inner pinion bearing, outer pinion bearing, pinion seal and axle seals. I'll recommend the shop when I know for sure that they did a good job.....

i did my true trac myself, but would highly recommend NOT doing that b/c the bearings & gears are a PIA to get on. fortunately i was able to reuse the old shims and got exactly the same backlash.

as soon as my sealant on the cover dried I hit the dragstrip. i don't think you need to wear these things in like you do gear sets.

Drive Train Specialists (DTS) has all the bearings and stuff you need. For JUST a diff swap all you need is:

diff bearings
diff bearing races
shims (may or may not need them)
axle bearings
gear marking compound
All above is just over $100 from DTS
+
3 qts gear oil (non-synthetic, can't remember the rating and weight but you can find a post of mine over on NLOC with this info)

RTV sealant

i think that's it.

I hope to do the swap before too long but I plan on waiting until the stocker gives up.

I'm sure our #1 SV Chris Nelson can get a kit together that has all the bearings, seals and stuff to do the swap with as well as for the pinion if desired.

Thanks for the compliment, but not yet Fade. SKF does our (NAPA) bearings and there are part #'s for them but ...

1. The individual Bearings have part #'s but are only available in the kit.

2. The Part # for the kit exists, but the kit isn't available yet.

:bash: I was told any day now, but we know how that goes.

Yeah that sounds like a good price. I also had to get the pinion bearings (2) so I guess that's why I paid a little more. I do find it funny though, even though I'D WIN spoke with a True Trac rep. that said to use synthetic, the guy who put my TT in said not to. He said when heated up, synthetic moves away from the bearings. Wierd.

im looking at buying one for my 04 L

I got it from LFP. Always a good deal with them and I bought mine without shims, the shop I took mine to had there own shims.

I believe that all the lighnings use the same posi. so your 04 and my 01 will be the same part.

I really dont get how you can't get the indivdual stuff and only get it in kit form and how the hell does that not even exist yet. I think someone droped the ball somewhere along the line
(no i dont mean you)
