I am looking at replacing both my 2003 Explorer Eddie Bauer (4.6) and my 1995 F150 (5.0, 5 speed) with one crew cab pickup.

Several have caught my eye but one is a 2010 F150 Platinum, 4wd with the 5.4 v8. It had 42K miles and listed for $29998. I had been excluding the EB engines from my search but am not sure that's wise.

I welcome your thoughts on these three engines and even on the different model year quirks or oddities.

Thamks.

I would exclude the ecoboost unless you get a full engine warranty for life and leave it 100% stock. Darn things are ticking time bombs.

5.4's have become notorious for cam phaser issues, and they're typically catastrophic. They're also dogs compared to the EB or 5.0. The newer trucks are much better IMO. Personally I wouldn't be scared of the EB, but warranties are always good peace of mind.

If you want pulling power, the ecoboost (3.5).
If it's a daily driver with lighter loads...the 5.0 or 2.7 EB.
I own a 5.4 which is a pooch compared to my 3.5 EB
