Ok, so im buying a D40 next weekend and I want to get a good tripod. I don't want to spend more than 150 dollars for it. I will mainly be using it for night photography, landscapes, and automotive photography. Can anyone suggest some good tripods.

Ive read that manfrotto and bogen are really good. Also what type of head does everyone prefer?

Tripod choices are like spouse choices - everyone has an opinion. In your price range, I recommend a Manfrotto 3021BPRO, with a Manfrotto ballhead. Both the tripod and ballhead should be sized based on the weight of the camera + largest lens you will use. Don't scrimp here; a few extra bucks will give good results. Scrimp and you'll wisah you hadn't.

There's an old saying - tripods can be stable, cheap, and light but you only get two of the three. If you only want to spend $150 for tripod and head, you might want to look for a used one. I agree with Harry though, the 3021BPRO (now discontinued) is a nice one to get.
