Transporting short block

I'm planning to take my short block off the engine stand, put in the back of the SUV and drive it over to a shop to have it worked on. (And then at a later date will need to pick back up in either short block or long block form.) Should I put the oil pan back on and just let it sit on the pan? Or put some boards under the block instead?
Thanks

I usually leave the pan on and put some kind of support under the rails. The pan will keep oil and stuff off your carpet. I also use tie downs to keep it in place.

I got a large card board box and just sat the short block on the valley when I put it in the trunk of my Grand Marquis. I didn't have to strap it down because the crushed box kept it from moving. I didn't get any oil going past the rings into the trunk, but my engine was pretty thoroughly drained.

granted it was in the back of my truck but I put mine in an old tire, kept the weight on the on the block instead of the pan for the most part
