I used to live in PA-north of Harrisburg. One of the most peaceful, enjoyable day trips was to Amish Country. Now that community is shattered and shaken by the unspeakable act of a man who tied little girls together, with the desire to sexually abuse them. Apparently he'd done this to cousins when he was 12, and had an overpowering desire to do it again. This barbaric act was topped by him shooting about 12, then taking his life-all while his wife was in a Bible study.
As a former PA resident, Christian, and mental health professional, this calculated set of actions against a devoutly religious, gentle, non-violent sect's youngest, most innocent and defenseless members defies explanation. The killer's stated hatred of life and God gives us some insight into his mind, and his actions after he pulled the plug on his belief system violated all societal taboos-sex with children, holding children hostage, killing children, suicide, and the list goes on. Some people are that close to snapping, and when they choose to disown their belief system, they give up perhaps the only thing that kept them sane. Then his rage and fantasy life guided his actions.
Despite what we think about the killer, let us extend our prayers to the family members who lost loved ones, the Amish Community, and everyone who was involved in helping and trying to make sense of things following the carnage.
