Is is possible to install a 170 thermostat with a pair of radiator hose clamp pliers? Or is it easier to just drain everything, then run the install?

You'll end up having to drain your coolant for a thermostat regardless of how you tackle it. You don't even need hose pliers. You aren't taking the hose off, you are taking the cover off, which happens to have a hose attached to it. Either way most of you coolant will drain out.

Remove the 2 bolts on the thermostat cover, pop out the old one, pop in the new one, bolt cover back on, refill coolant, and bleed accordingly
